Definitely, a boring, but informative replacement for the crown is one of the easiest, and honestly one of the best solutions to this problem. I think a crown infers 'elite' too much, it's too shiny.

Mentors aren't supposed to be experts at the game, and sprouts don't need expert advice. They need guidance for the easiest parts of the game, the MSQ. Even if a mentor just knows the basics, that's still more than a sprout, and if a sprout clears content with a mentor, that's all they need. Sprouts don't need to be coddled. They can learn from their own mistakes. We were all sprouts once!
Many specific cases I have witnessed. Are you talking about a specific case or many cases or one hypothetical case?
One doesn't exclude the other, you should know that. What I do or do not ingame doesn't have any influence on what I do or do not in a forum. If you talking about a specific player log in and give your honest opinion to the player but be kind enough to explain in which situation the player wasn't a good mentor, if you generalize won't do anything for the rest of the community according to other players the majority doesn't even read the forums.
And forums are there to discuss things, state opinions, get other people's point of view, exchange experiences. After all, you are posting here aswell, are you not?
As already stated, those aren't hypothetical cases. You shouldn't assume something simply because it suits you.To have the context of the situations in which mentors weren't good is also important is just not talk in hypothetical cases and only one versions cause that is for failed judges.
I could recount several situations from last week alone but what would that "prove"? Nothing, as it is quite possible that I make things up and judging by your past posts you tend to assume that people make things up.
No I like to know both versions mentor/player to have the full context of each situation and do not jump into assumptions that is why I made you questions and not affirmations, reading comprehension might help you there.

It's part of me will not jump into forming personal opinion about mentor/player subject based in one version only and without knowing the whole situation, simple as that.
Specifically in cases where players are not skilled in English language and use youtube guide or examples as tools to avoid give the wrong direction because google translator is not the best solution.

Playing in the European DC, this happens more frequently than not. I agree. Can tell you about one case however that happened to have a French speaking mentor that wasn't good at English and did pass me the youtube guides for DK dps rotation some players are not English native and use youtube to provide either guides or examples to not risk give a wrong direction.
For someone who liked to present himself as neutral and above quick judgement you are awfully quick to get personal. Not just in this thread but others aswell.
You realise that people are generally more willing to listen if you stay respectful, right? After all, you are constantly stating that people need to be respectful towards each other. Might help to heed your own advice.
And on a side note, people have the option to check the languages they speak. Even if they are not fluent in english, they can always say so. I highly doubt that someone not being fluent in the language most commonly spoken was the cause for problem in most cases stated here and in other threads like the Duty Finder Tales.
No I don't get it personal I gave you one specific example that happened with me in the case of the youtube guide to DK, which is different of getting it personal. For someone who liked to present himself as neutral and above quick judgement you are awfully quick to get personal. My gender is female irl.
I don't know which cases you are referring into so cant understand if there were communication obstacles or not as said to form one opinion must know both sides of the situations.
Can tell however the most situations we get in EU DC the language difference can be difficult in Mentor/Player situations, is not the 1st time one player in one raid/dungeon explains the mechanics in English and in party others are translating in French, Dutch or German.

There is no good way to fix this, it can't be fixed. Make it easier and trolls come in easier, make it harder and alot of them will be "elitist" , keep it like this and its still bad.
Conclusion.. some people are douchebags

Yep ...... This surely would be a good place to place a famous quote...
But lets not.

I maintain the only way to fix this would be to make it less shiny. Make it something boring, with a specific intended purpose being, to actually mentor new/returning players as it was meant. There would be less of them, but the few that there would be would probably be there for it's intended purpose.

There really are people that do it for an ico crown? (I'm really asking)I maintain the only way to fix this would be to make it less shiny. If bad player could be out of mentor with just a icon change I'm all for that. I personnaly couldn't care less about an icon. Even more as I don't see them as I tend to disable nameplate.
edit :
I like this ! It would be fun.
