This right here. I have mentorship on my main, but not other alts. It's... weird. With the crown on, I'm lumped in wit the unhelpful and sometimes outright rude people on NN. And with it off, lol you're just a sprout what do you know?

There is no consistent, moderated quality check for the mentorship program so people will take it as they see it. And often, it's seen as a joke. I initially got my crown to stand out and help people. It didn't work as I'd expected. Especially when people leave the crown on with no intention to be a mentor and are learning something themselves.

Oh look, responses. Looks like they fall into 3 main categories so I'll just address those as wholes.

The first is the "that totally isn't what people expect from mentors" category - wonderful for you guys for having realistic expectations!

1.Obviously noone can offer instruction if they're new to something. But even if they cant offer instruction they can be polite.
2.No, unsolicited advice is fine from anyone as long as it's not the OMFG U Suk why arent you doin this Pleb!?!
3.I'll take polite over Good at something every single time.
4.Where did you get this are you even groking what you're reading at this point?
5.Patient and frankly nobody asked to be carried.
(Edit: I thought the first one was a typo but you keep saying grok. It seems to be used in place of the word "understand" so perhaps try that? It'd make this post a bit more intelligible and force people to rely on context cues less which is particularly hard in text since we can't hear tone)

That does not necessarily mean the rest of the people around you also have realistic expectations.

This is particularly true surrounding advice, everyone is trying to act like the only advice to which people respond negatively is rude "lol you suck" style comments; this is not true. I'm regularly ignored and occasionally snapped at for giving perfectly polite criticisms like "If you save some of the larger cooldown like Vengance for the big trash pulls it makes it easier on the healer" and "Holy has a Stun effect that will basically negate all damage for 7-10 seconds if you chain cast it, don't worry if your mp gets low I'll mana shift you" so no it isn't an issue of people only hating rude advice.

The second is the "if you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen" response.

These are particularly funny because they basically try to say that none of the problems I've spoken about exist - or rather that they do exist but they aren't problems. Lmao, sure thing kiddos.

Jokes on you, outside of mentor roulette I haven't had the crown on for more than a year now. Please reach harder.

And finally we have... whatever this is? Basically the people who add nothing, not even comedy. How can someone with 392 posts on the forums so frequently say nothing of value or consequence? Go away, I don't need thread bumps from you nor do I want them.

I picked up the mentor crown because I actually wanted to help new players learn the game. I wore it for a good while too answering questions and explaining fight and class mechanics where needed. I wasn't rude or condescending.

    Then I took it off.

It became too much to have to be "on" all the time. Sometimes I just wanted to play the game and keep to myself and not feel obligated to teach Brayflox's Longstop for the 842nd time to people that weren't listening to me in the first place. And then there was the crapslide of hate against mentors that started later when people who didn't have any intention of actually BEING a mentor started wearing the crown so they could get their mount. I've encountered one of these "mentors" myself and it was not a pleasant experience. It ended with a GM report in fact.

I want to help people. I want to make it easier for people to learn the game. But I don't need the pressure that comes from obligation and I don't need to be painted with the same brush as that guy I reported in the previous paragraph.

It was a good idea for a system. There should've been no reward attached to it.

Every time I see this thread I read "A meteor kicked my dog" . . it doesn't make sense why would a met-.. Bad brain. XD

I think if they made the mentor roulette open (once you meet the requirements for mentor status) without being a mentor (don't need to apply) and that the reward is just part of that, would help in increasing the quality of mentors who want to particularly be helpful at the moment (since you don't need the crown to get the reward).

Also I think the reward should shift from number of accomplishments to something else, such that harder ones that you might not win are still worth giving a whirl. Reducing the amount of leaving even if you're not sure you could win it.

I think altogether it would make more people with the crown up being ones that want to be helpful, keep the mentor roulette being good for people stuck in old content/undesirable content, and open up the reward away from the crown. Although keep the requirement of sort of knowing the game first before being allowed in lol, perhaps move it to the intermediate and advanced hall system if added (tutorial system, advanced being extreme level teaching/tests).

Also a bummer for mentors who help out and because of some bad eggs the whole thing gets labeled. One bad person in a group can make the label that the whole gaming community toxic ;/ lol, that's unfortunate simplification.

Seems like so little words triggered you though.

Jokes aside, you really can't tell when someone is fed up by those kind of thread?

Not really. Most people just don't read said threads, instead of coming in and antagonizing people because they got triggered by them...

You might try not actually acting like someone who was triggered before acusing others of the same.

You're fed up? Avoid this thread or even the whole board, if seeing the title of the thread bothers you.

Sure was triggered by surprise to find such an answer to my words.
However I'll still try to speak to people, some are still giving interesting opinion that could be usefull to avoid situation where we can have such thread.
