It's kind of a vicious cycle. A few bad apples (mentors) ruin the whole bunch in most peoples' eyes. I became a mentor myself but ended up ditching the crown after awhile because of the crap I got just for trying to help. I was never rude or condescending, though that sometimes changed when people were like that in response to my tips. All I wanted to do is help people but...it just wasn't worth the stress.

Yesterday, I got Titan EX from the roulette with another mentor and it was actually two sprouts (6 sprouts total) who decided to ruin it for everybody by turning on the ahole mode (both were subsequently reported for harassment). Naturally they were adviced to go try it on PF afterwards for the obvious reasons, but aside from the two sprouts, nobody really wanted to just give up.

Honestly though I can't parse so I acknowledge that I can only tell so much about competence when I'm not playing with a friend who can but even as a healer I've not noticed mentors being specifically worse than other players.

I just read through another thread about how awful people think mentors are, multiple people claiming they'd never met a competent mentor and like.... bull. I call bull on that. It's just a bold faced lie unless your threshold for competence is sky high.

Let's look at the requirements to be a mentor; you don't need to be level capped in anything, you don't need to have completed any content that is remotely challenging and there is no "competence test" before joining. You need to have played the game for a little while... that's basically it.

If SE made being a mentor harder (say... cleared the prior tier's final Savage fight as a new one comes out?) they would not only be invalidating the main purpose of the mentor role (filling queues) but also would invariably receive large scale backlash from the hypercasuals.

So what is it, community? What do you want from mentors? What makes you happy? Because it seems to me mentors need to be
    • Always able to offer instruction
    • Never give unsolicited instruction
    • Good at all the content (yes, even if they're new to it)
    • Good at whatever job they're playing (even though they might be leveling it still)
    • Patient and willing (and able!) to carry everyone through everything

When they fall outside of this it's immediately chocked up to this ridiculous standard that maybe .01% of players can actually reach somehow being the baseline for a status that you can get by crafting a couple hundred collectables.

Chill. The. Fluff. Out. Just because someone has a little crown icon by their name doesn't mean squat in this game and if you're willing to stereotype people for it you're likely no prize yourself.

    GCBTW.
No , I frankly dont think you managed to grok what most people were complaining about in the first place.

1.Obviously noone can offer instruction if they're new to something. But even if they cant offer instruction they can be polite.
2.No, unsolicited advice is fine from anyone as long as it's not the OMFG U Suk why arent you doin this Pleb!?!
3.I'll take polite over Good at something every single time.
4.Where did you get this are you even groking what you're reading at this point?
5.Patient and frankly nobody asked to be carried.

I love being a mentor myself but I have witnessed all kinds of different things as a mentor. I will only offer unsolicited advice if it doesn't seem like we are getting somewhere with a pull or whatever other issue. I think people need to keep an open mind at mentors instead of chocking them up as they are all same type of people. Many of those people just get the crown to have it next to their name and that's their only reason for having it.

The best thing to do is to respectfully dissuade them from using the crown if they are using it and being a terrible person. At the same time we can't have unreal expectations of a mentor that they perfect all of the time, we are all humans.

May be someone whos first word is not a swearing when the party done a mechanic wrong and may be someone who will not rage quit after 1 wipe because he think he could pull more than 3 groups of trash and blame it on the healer, or may be someone who have read and own it up to what SE have type about mentor when they choose to become one

I usually do not get into details on any content etiher unless it is sorely needed(wipes boss) or there is obviously a sprout/first run person in the group. Generally though I don't really say too much in dungeons as a whole cause they are rather easy to get the first time around and like myself, most just like to experience the fight themselves before really asking for advice on a fight. Trials and raids are where I usually give more advice on tips and mechanics(if I remember them half the time. XD) A vast majority of the time, no matter whether I open discuss mechanics or not, I am always open to answer questions in regards to some mechanics. I always, also try and keep things short as possible to try not to take up too much time. Being a mentor is so much more easier when I primarily play my tank, not so much on DPS. XD

I'm not a mentor, but I will speak from experience as somebody who likes to help people just to be nice - sometimes you don't even get the chance to. It's sad how many times this has happened:

1: The people barge into the boss fight as fast as possible. There are 1 or more sprouts looking for clears in the party, and they're not the tank.
    2: The party wipes.
3: They act like nothing happened.
4: Go back to step one.

I mean, I guess I could explain it while they're all running from the shortcut to the boss, but then they might get mad at me for staying still....

There's far more garbage players than mentors.

    Yesterday, Susano trial. 3 wipes.

Load in, asked if everyone knows mechanics. No answer.

Wipe on the sword smash thing because OT didn't block the balls. Which I told him to block or we wipe. He ignored me and we wiped.

2nd try, OT decides to be MT, undergeared, huge pain in the ass to keep alive due to undergeared and tank busters. He also used 2 mitigation skills. I know it was 2 because he was a Warrior and I played warrior for a long time, I know their skills. Eventually wipe because people are bad at avoiding AoEs and both of us healers ran out of MP due to having to spam AoE heals. We had a bard that was asked to use Refresh multiple times, which he ignored.

3rd try, wipe on sword smash because no one blocked balls, again.

    4th time we did it.

I genuinely enjoy helping people, but holy shit do the people in FF14 make it difficult.
