We need natural disasters. A tornado, earthquake, or tsunami that wipes out some houses and makes them available. You know to make it fair for new players. Since old players can own like 8 houses per account sounds like a good random way to open up plots for new free companies and players.

Make it fair for new players by making it unfair for established, dedicated players? And there's already auto-demo. You should start seeing more houses open up in June.

Also, anyone can own 8 houses per account - not just old players. Actually 9: 1 personal, plus 8 FCs.

Per world, it's not account based.

Ah, you're correct of course! I was basing my reply on what the OP said, and ended up wording it badly.

So basically "boo hoo, why does there have to be other people doing what I want to do"? Housing is a very small, inconsequential part of the game. If you want to decorate houses without yucky Other Humans, try The Sims.

I see this argument a lot - as if the existence of another game in which you can decorate houses invalidates any desire for housing in this one. These games are not mutually exclusive, do you know? You should see the Newcrest I'm working on.

Except you can't, because it's offline. No one can visit my neighborhoods there... but they can in FFXIV.

A house in the Sims can't bring me FFXIV gil, minions, or mounts, but here I can garden all the mandragoras, blood peppers, and royal ferns I like, and I can maintain a fleet of airships and submarines. A house in the Sims can't dye my FFXIV chocobo like a house or apartment here can. A house in the Sims requires me to buy terrible stuff packs I disagree with just to get that one cute curtain and the loveseat that matches the sofa from that other expansion, whereas in FFXIV I can just maintain a sub to a game I love anyway and keep up with the content. Furnishings in the Sims are all immediately available with no more work than clicking through a catalogue, while in FFXIV, I enjoy that I put in the effort to create or earn the currency and/or reputation to purchase every piece I could.

And most importantly, a house in the Sims isn't on Hydaelyn. I can't walk out of my door in Del Sol Valley, mount up, and race off into the horizon on some adventure in a story-rich world I love. I can't decide on a whim to try to duo T9 with the Sim who lives next door for that shiny pair of earrings.

OP is being silly in his tantrum about how he wants the housing system to be. There are houses elsewhere. Lots of them. The world visit system eliminates most of the barriers to transfer within one's data center, and SE is unlikely to add more wards until we're evenly distributed and all full up, so it's up to OP to decide what means more to him and live with that choice. There are a lot of reasons to dismiss OP, but can we stop pretending "the Sims exists" is a valid one?

Square Enix suspended the auto-demolition due to the hurricanes being so brutal last year. The reactivated it this past patch so there should be a mass demolition of houses 45 days after that. June 6th or 7th should be a day A LOT of houses explode at the exact same moment.

People that are wanting houses immediately are likely going to be frustrated.

I camped for hours so I know what it's like - I lost a couple to relo (and I cheered them on, because they have the plot they want!), and lost one because I went to bed, and I camped one for 10 hours and got it.

I ended up transferring to the server my current guild is on, but within 24 hours I had gotten a small and then relocated to what I consider the perfect plot. It may just be because I had good luck with all of this. The challenge was kind of fun, but I doubt I would have done it for days on end. Mainly because I realize that now is the tightest time ever for houses, and more will be opening up even on packed servers, as time goes on.

No matter what, I knew that I would get one eventually, and I would be so happy when I did. Until then, I would concentrate on other aspects of the game - I have so many things to do here that I get overwhelmed at times choosing what I want to do!

I actually like the current system - with the exception of the LENGTH of the RNG timer. That is one change they could make (significantly reduce the max time) that would positively affect the community. I would hate to see it go over 2 hours, but 3 max. I'm not sure what this interminable length is doing to combat resellers, honestly.

This. Especially the apartment. I guarantee you, even the high-pop servers have open apartments.

Stop trying to make players, who are rightfully unhappy about a horribly made feature, appear spoiled. The housing system, specifically nearly everything to do with housing acquisition, is a disgrace. Not only is it ridiculous to imply players have no right to complain about this, you basically saying "lol go play the Sims, problem solved" is pretty much condoning the neglect that has caused grief to literally thousands of players.

You say housing is inconsequential. Well I have had hundreds of hours of fun in this game from housing alone. It's certainly not inconsequential to someone like me.
