Given that Final Fantasy has magi-tech, I fail to see an issue with a car. It's only natural that magitech would evolve in that direction.
So I fail to see an issue.

While heading to a hunt right after having read the last posts of this thread, i did have a good laugh when stumbling on this awesome totally-not-immersion-breaking mech gorilla who can fly like superman with jetpacks on his back XD

Complaining about a car in an FF game loaded down with magitek is like complaining about Superman's disguise while ignoring the fact that he can fly under his own power, punch planets out of their orbit, and shoot lasers from his eyes.
His disguise works because he uses his powers to vibrate or something? But yeah, reason for everything.
I don't exactly mind the car when it's sitting still, but I absolutely hate it when it moves. Like I said ages ago when people were originally clamoring for Cloud's bike, these kinds of vehicles look absurd with how slow and clunky they move. The Regalia looks like it moves about as fast as a Power Wheel and the way it moves over uneven terrain (so... 99% of every map) and turns so unnaturally...
I guess it looks okay when it flies though, but I wish it deployed its canopy when taking off.
The only saving grace is the fact that it's essentially a free mount with twice the carry capacity of those $30 store mounts and that's too good to pass up, even if it moves like an abomination.
The Regalia wasn't immersion-breaking during the quest line. It made sense in the context of Cid, the Ironworks, and magitek-based vehicles.
I got the car yesterday after maxing out on the Fashion Report for the week. Used it twice in the Azim Steppes, once on the ground, once in the air.
Will I continue to use it? About as much as the other magitek mounts I have, which is ... hardly ever. That's about the same for every other mount I get -- they're nice to own, mostly pretty to look at, but I still prefer my chocobo.
Personally, don't have issues with the car. I do wish the game did more two/three/four-person mounts. The whale one I find to be a bit odd considering how much space there is on it for two more people.

I think different theories over the years have been some form of super-hypnosis or just simple good acting and use of body language on his part. Vibration sounds more something like The Flash would do, but I can't confirm they never used the excuse for Supes.
Most of the terrain (not all) was designed for walking/running mounts. They can get get away with off road vehicles moving over the terrain with a semblance of realism, but anything suited to flat roads is going to look pretty ridiculous flapping about over logs and steps etcI don't exactly mind the car when it's sitting still, but I absolutely hate it when it moves.
