1. It can be retrieved from gear. (Stripped old gear, have tons of materia now.)

...you just saved my gil. I don't think I would have learned this before I started replacing my gear in ShB.

I also didn't realize until recently that you can add more materia than there are slots. Like that's a thing right?
I want to try it but not this late in an expansion... just saving up for the next now. I guess being able to unmeld helps with that too.

Yes, but only on certain gear. Crafted gear can be pentamelded (5 melds), but gear you get from dungeons/raids/tomestones can only accept materia in slots.
