Guys... The point of this thread is to say that there is no "lock" in place. There's nothing "locking" these genders away from us. And is nothing to "unlock" them either... simply because they don't exist. There is no "key" to "unlock" these genders and make them playable. They just don't exist. You won't be able to select a female Hrothgar or a male Viera in 5.0 not because there is a "lock", but because these genders are simply not there.

Put another way, it's just a thread about sementics and the use of the word "lock" being inappropriate in the context we're in.

So, OP is technically right, but I don't think anyone actually cares, as it won't change the fact that people won't be able to play as female Hrothgar or male Viera when 5.0 will launch.

They could've just kept one nice thing as a whole and announce that they got the other nice thing in the back, with a possible plan they get that one done by the next expansion.

SE at least attempted to implement the Au Ra into the world with the Doma refugee story here. And it also make sense for the Viera to be around, since the presence of Fran confirmed their existence.
The Hrothgar, as for now, haven't even been witnessed in the current live game in form of a npc or a single mention through dialogue.

Instead, they get the brute force 'they have been here all along' handwave/retcon when the expansion comes out. And that did cost the players the gender diversity they hoped and expected from the game.

That is quite a blunder they pulled off here, given how much they usually invest themselves in working out the lore.

Like I don't care about the whole race argument, elezen for life, but you know, we know that male viera do in fact exist in the games lore, and that we can only play as female viera. You could almost say, we're locked to picking female viera.

It's almost as if genderlock means a playable race that only has one accessible sex/gender as an option and has nothing to do with whether assets for said missing gender do or do not exist yet.

I thought about that too but then I decided most people use the word Lock for gender is because they assumed each race should have two genders - which I agree with - so when a race only has 1 gender, then it is locked to that gender.

I'm sure you know that their plan was to implement Hrothgar only and to use Balthier as the NPC in Ivalice raids, not Fran (so there wouldn't have been any mention of Viera at all). And also, that they were planning on this being the last time they add a new race. So if they go by the original plan, you'd only see Hrothgar and that's it. No potential for Viera at all.

But now that they added female Viera, there is a potential of having the other genders if there's a profitable demand, since it's still part of the same races they already added. The dev team most likely anticipated the backlash, so they chose not to make the genders that would be the least playable ones compared to the opposite gender. But if they see a profitable demand, then they will do it.
