And of course, you have the reaction to the reaction of those that either support or don't have a leg in the race weighing in.

Removing my own cynicism with catching choice words that I feel are politically/culture arguments, I can say I only would support removing the genderlock simply so the choice is there. But quite frankly, I don't care. What I have gotten invested in is just the overall narrative and behaviors surrounding the issue.
That is the general sentiment I've seen as well. I wouldn't concern yourself with the outrage and sensationalist parts of it. At the end of the day, people are just requesting content for the game. No different than any other request that has been made on here.

I didn't read that particular post by J-Reyno, but I couldn't help but notice that interview took place in 2013. These two races were added to stroke nostalgia, much like different items like orchestration rolls with music from other games, the entire addition of the Ivalice and up coming Yorha raids, Eureka and almost everything about it being a call back to FFXI. It has nothing to do with fetishism, sexism, or anti homosexualism.

Well it leaves me concerned considering that's what people see. That's what I saw. I was having a fit when my FC members brought it up. Seriously though, I won't actually be upset about much until SE adds the floss dance emote. If they do that, I will unsub. Hahah, okay enough of that.

"With FF12, there are only female Viera appearing in the game. Due to that, we have no design references for the male versions. If we did create a male design for the Viera, he would be quite elegant, handsome, and slim. He would look more like the Elezen race, but with bunny ears.

What we were missing from the lineup of playable races was someone who looked more powerful and laser-focused on battle, while looking quite fierce. Implementing that kind of race, the dev team could bring more kinds of enrichment to this type of fantasy game. To fulfill player feedback as well as the dev team, we put the two races together."
    He makes a valid point.

Also, both sides of this affair have had their moments of shame. From those being homophobic, to those sending death threats to SE employees.

    Shame on everyone.

And sadly since everytime they say they can't do something the answer is a tatrum of "I don't care you lazy do it anyway" he probably decided to not acknowledge it.
Races are apparently more difficult than jobs because of the amount of weapons and armor that they have to adjust and create on all models for both genders of said race.

I think it really depends on if they're able to reuse an existing race's assets or not. If they were to use the elezen body model for instance, they'd already having all the armor working with the model. I imagine the real time sink would be the animations.

I mean, the reason why the Hrothgar and Viera don't have working head slots is because to make that work they'd have to go through literally every single headgear model in the game and rig them to sit right on the head. So as a workaround they're disabling all the headgear models save for specific ones they're going to manually adjust to work (like glasses).

I'm not an expert, but I doubt that anyone had to go through every single piece of gear to make them work with Hrothgar/Viera. That'd be insane. Likely they were able to take body assets from roe/hyur, modify them to an extent, while keeping all the original gear mapping/rigging. So when a Viera puts on a piece of armor, it is going to show on their body the same way it would show on a Hyur body.

Not trying to say it isn't a ton of work, just not the "you have to manually review every single piece of gear in the game" kind of work. lol

That people should be expected to care about any and every class is reaching, I believe.

By now most people know what class they want to play, already have it at 70 and their first priority come ShB will be to level 70>80.

People more interested in Dancers/Gunbreaker (and perhaps interested in avoiding overcrowded 70+ leveling areas) will be the minority* going against the grain.

(As a former WoW player some years ago, that is my take on how launch will go. I haven't been around for a FFXIV expansion launch to date.)

That being said, people are placing their stakes where their interests lie. Don't presume to tell others what they should care about, or degrade their opinion. It's beyond petty, and it's gas lighting to boot.

Being able to play the character you want to play is *not* a cosmetic option. Characterization is core gameplay.

And yeah, a lot of the response has been toxic, but the trolls calling for a continuation of the gender lock for bigoted reasons are only doing their nasty cause damage. I'm sure Square finds them detestable, and it brings more sympathy for those wanting both genders represented.

I do not agree that it is core gameplay (many games have NO customization), but do understand that it's very important for people. I also want to express that the people who wish to have the genderlock have just enough of a right to say so as much as we do for wanting male Viera or female Hrothgar, whether certain people view it as bigoted or not. Realistically, we shouldn't be tearing each other apart over this. But I get it's the internet and that's practically an unrealistic thought.

It is a content, but it is not a core gameplay content of FFXIV. Core gameplay content are things like MSQ, dungeons, raids, exploring the open world etc. And of course I'm not saying this from my own. Look at the trailers SE make for new players during free trial adventure. All you see them showcasing are stuff related to the things I stated above (notice that even in HW trailer, there's not even a small mention regarding new races).

Just like the emote system we have. Some enjoy them very much and would hate that they don't get new emotes. But we can't say it's a core content of FFXIV.
