Somebody asked Matsuno how male Viera should look, and this was his response. Mostly joking, I'm sure (considering it literally looks like a clown), but its safe to assume if he has any input that they'll be much like the original HW concept art was.
Which is great, imo, but lord I would prefer they not use the Highlander model as a base lol.
Genderlocking is a horrible decision, and lore is not a valid excuse when so many things already break the lore.... lore that is from another game not even in the same universe as this one. If they really really really did not want the viera "lore" to be broken, they should just call them Viis on the source and viera on the first like they did with ronso and say almost all male died there and the few left are hidding or whatever. Its their lore, they write it, they can make it fit anyway they want.
I disagree, the male miqo'te has a very hunched over posture, with a very open body language. Compared to Omega M's very straight back, he appears tall and has a very striking elegant presence, now add some strong legs for speed and feet like the females and sprinkle in some claws and you have a very unique design.
If they enabled the player to make the Male Viera the same height as the female or under by -> slider, it would be very interesting, we would have an elegant race with a height setting that fits with real rabbits in the wild, yet the difference between the sexes would be clear, but both would fit together thematically. And by keeping him handsome and slightly androgynous he would fit well into the Final fantasy canon, and most male players wouldn't get turned away ( as they probably would from a cutesy little bunny boy. But then again Lala's are quite popular with both sexes )
Viera have been very very popular since 2006, introducing FFXIV's version of the male counterpart would rake in old fans and give fans that grew up with the games an exclusive option to play a never before seen version of the Viera, that's just too good of an option to pass up for SE in my opinion.
A point I'd like to raise, and this is for the Devs' consideration as well, obviously, is that race is more than just what they look like.
In the aesthetics department, it's also their mannerism and emotes and the overall visual feel they give off. Midlanders and Miqo'te have similar models but they give off a very different 'feel'. Saying Viera would be Elezen with bunny ears is very reductive and ignores a massive portion of what a playable character actually contains.
Outside of visuals, race is lore and context and history. In a game that prides itself in its lore, and caters so much to its rp community besides, telling someone to play an Elezen with the bunny ears instead o a male Viera is... I can't even begin to describe. Setting aside how within Elezen and Viera you'll have different lores depending on clan, the races themselves come from such different places, have such different stories, they don't even begin to compare.
This of course also applies to female Hrothgars vs. female Roes. Even without the differences in aesthetics, playing one would not be like playing the other.
I hope that when they consider adding the missing gender-race combos, they also take this into consideration and see the added value these additions would have.
If we are voting I vote keep Viera unique Yoshi and team and make them only female, detractors need not play. :^). ON the other hand female Hrothgar should be a thing since there is really no argument lore wise against them.
It is not unique to have a sex-locked race in an eastern MMORPG, nor is it a good idea in general, lest we eventually go the way of TERA. +1 for removing sex locks in FFXIV.
But as someone who isn't "catered to" constantly like people who enjoy symetrical female classes with beautiful faces, I'm really upset that yet again, they're catered to, and we end up with basically nothing.
When the Au Ra came out, they had the women with these beautiful doll-like faces, doe-eyes, basically someone's dream girl I'm sure. The men? For some reason, they look like angry aliens. I mean that as in, aside from the handful of people who will say "Well *I* like them", generally they weren't very attractive to us. Aesthetically it's just not fair. They were literally covered in scales while the females were minimal as to not cover up the pretty features.
So yet again, we get the shaft. A beautiful girl race for anyone who's attracted to females, and a literal anthropomorphic cat as "a response to the female-only Viera". No, that's not a response, that's a consolation prize. That's a thoughtless one at that. You gave us an ugly man, *again*.
This makes me feel like, personally, only straight men matter. I understand more than just those people like women, but generally speaking, that's what they're selling to. And me? I don't matter. Us? We don't matter. Every race. Every single race, there's a gross imbalance aside the Mi'quote and the Midlanders. The Elezen look like Cher with no face that comes close to Aymerics, the Lalafels are.. not really there to be attractive, and the Roe's and Highlanders are buff awesome people. Two. We get *two* races, while they get every female in the book.
This is how I feel. I would appreciate not being told off or devalued for having emotions. This is upsetting because this game means a lot to me, and I'm getting to the point where I feel like I seriously don't matter. I know male Viera are buff too, but that's exactly my point. I'm not looking for pretty boys, I'm looking to get what the other side is getting. I want to see every class in balance, not "Let's give them hot girls and make creative ranged choices with the men".
I think women should have a range of those same creative choices as well. They *all* have doll faces, even the burly Highlanders. They're just angrier.
With all due respect, this is written in hopes somebody will read it in earnest. Have a good day. I've rightly exposed myself, and now I expect a lot of ridicule for it. But it's something I wholly believe in, and so I'm putting myself out here regardless.
