That makes it sound like it's going to use Monk gear... which... I mean... Logically the more STR you have the stronger you could throw something I guess...

My guess is that they plan to consolidate gear into VIT/STR/DEX/INT/MND instead of having very specific subsets that have become redundant, like Maiming(originally had less magic defense, changed in ARR when dragoons would instantly die to raid-wide AoE that other jobs survived) and Scouting(originally had different defenses than Aiming, changed in either ARR or HW).
