Gender locked race?

But for someone playing since the 2.0 beta this game has been apart of their life for a long time. Media affects us all, if it didn't people wouldn't name their children after characters from books, movies, games etc.

To say its "just a game" is not helpful in anyway to the conversation being had! If it was 'just a game" people should have just been happy with 1.0 cus hey "its just a game" its never just a game its the context and culture surrounding the game, the people who made it, the corporations who fund it, the community that plays its. Its the same for all forms of media! I could say movies like The Godfather" was just a movie calm down people "Titanic is just a movie" "Harry Potter is just a movie" "The Avengers is just a movie" no that's reductionist and ignores everything surrounding the thing in question!

I was in alpha of 1.0 been playing longer then anyone for the most part, your point?

There is so much to enjoy here with the new expansion, new areas, story, characters, gear, jobs, interactions with other players. But no, lets harp on ONE thing you dont like to the point of sounding like a child throwing a fit because they didnot get the color toy they wanted.

Not everything needs to be inclusive, not everything needs to have everything someone wants, not everything is for everyone.

You mean like Mi'qote are suppsoed to be rare also. Sorry, but this is a lame excuse, explain this also to Au'ra which were new and from another land and suddenly we had them as starter race aswell, explain that lore wise also, stop defending them for such lame excuses.

As said, it was a decision they did in the past to get FFXIV off the ground.

Now that the game is popular, they are most likely wanting to go back how they see their world, and want to go back to gender locking Viera because it makes sense.

Au Ra is not remotely close to a gender lock situation, and their idea is being a rare sight, just like miqo'te male. They exist, and it might be something SE regrets.

However, just because the vase has cracks in it here and there, it does not mean you need to take a hammer and make more cracks into it.

Gender locked Viera is most likely SE's attempt at making the Viera race believable, following the source material from the other game it comes from -- that being, males are almost non-existent and mythical, but they do exist, and they want to adhere to that in their game world, by not giving people the option to create a Viera male, and destroy that illusion and myth.

They might take even more liberties like this in the future, who knows.

There were two sides. A side for Viera and a side for a playable beastman. They tried to please both. They made the effort to anyway. In one way, you could say they were trying to be fair. They gave Viera and the beastman and they gave one of each genderlock only races. It's not unfair though if you didn't get the race you prefer because they still did it fairly to the best of their abilities. From their pov, it's just impossible to please everyone, but they try to. But it's hard to when they want to please themselves as well. They created a lore around there being no male Viera, and look at what happen with male miqo'tes and Au Ra as a whole. They're everywhere and not even close to their lores anymore. Just like Role Players want to create a story, so to does SE and they don't want to keep bending lore all the time, and can you really blame them? Would you want to bend your RP to please what someone else wants knowing your character would never do that? It's the same way from their PoV except on a much MUCH wider scale. What they do affects everyone. I can't say I agree in their decision but rather that I understand it. They could later give the other gender but in order to do that, they would have to sacrifice their story and they decided that just this one time, the lore meant more to them. Like sure they bend lore all the time, but it doesn't mean they like it, nor does it mean they want to continue to keep bending it just because they have multiple times before. Perhaps they have reached a point where they want to stop. Sometimes it's just not even up to them such as the crossovers with other games. At that point it's business getting in the way of their lore. If someone offered you a million dollars to advertise a cross promotion into your character's role play, I think we would all do it.

Of course there is a lot of things to be excited for! And Man a lot of the new areas, music and dungeons look amazing! And this announcement doesn't override that but, for alot of people "glamour is true endgame" and its more then just a tantrum over a different colored toy. But this is a feature among many that a large group of people were looking forward to! And they are allowed to be disappointed in it not happening.

For many (but not all) their character IS a representation of themselves, their creativity, their story telling, and/or the way they want to be perceived in game. Its why they are called avatars. People express themselves through their character and their design as one may choose to express themselves in the way they dress or the way they do their hair. This is just an extension of that! And there are whole industries built around clothes, hair etc.

We judge books by their covers all the time and so people want to look their best as they see it, and to present to others playing the game, because you can see other players and what they choose to wear, how they do their hair and what race they are, and which gender they choose. And they want you to see them as they want to be seen a freedom much more attainable in game then in real life.

and obviously this is just one part of the community, but not a small part. Having Male and Female Viera and Male and Female Hrothgar as choices hurts no one, if you don't want to be one of those, don't, that simple and if you do, then be one of them! Them giving us the choice lets everyone win!

Funny you should say that! Not everything is for everyone means people are well within their rights to leave if they so choose. Yes, it is "just a game" so it shouldn't bother anyone if people choose to...not buy it

And for many people it's a combination of things: the devs being overly cagey about the gender-lock, tone deaf responses to Eureka, BLU and the general concept of limited jobs, no new healer (Dancer or otherwise, I know I was happy about them being ranged until my hype evaporated like a raindrop in the sun). Think of it as the proverbial straw on the camel's back.

People claiming it to be sexist truly only lives in the moment and does not look into every other non-sexist stuff the game has.

Putting out 2 unique races with a gender lock each in the midst of 6 other playable non-gender locked races is not sexism.

I can understand the disappointment, however, of wanting male viera or female hrothgar, but calling it sexism is dumb.

I, for one, can appreciate SE going down the route to establish how rare Viera males are in their game world and lore to the point they don't want player interference to change that. They did once, and they have taken a turn on it again.

What? It is sexist when the girls look like playboy bunnies, yet we aren't allowed to have males to that regard. The same can be said toward the Hrothgar, as it's fairly sexist to only give the men their powerful beastly race and not the girls. These genders exist in the lore for these races as they should exist in the character creator.

you are preaching to the quire here, I live endgame, glamour is life, but you also have to work with what is given to you. It is true that having the other gender of these races would hurt no one, and I in fact was fine with how it rolled out lastnight, or even if we just got m/f Viera. This way we get two races, not just one, more choices for people over all. We could have just not had any new races what so ever, but we got not just one, but two.
