Thank you for all the responses! The fact that it hasn't been answered in game is probably why I've been having difficulty finding answers haha.

I've noticed they make a lot of comments about their pom aching or freaking out at the thought of you touching it as well, so I like the idea that it is a sensory organ of sorts! Or maybe, since it's balloon like, it helps them stay afloat (via magic or something)? Those tiny little wings couldn't keep them afloat imo...

One of the moogle beast tribe quests also has one moogle (during the 'free kupo nuts' quest) talk about making his pom nice and fluffy, I think. It definitely looks like a balloon though...

It definitely seems like it's some kind of sensory organ - maybe for an aetherial "sixth sense". One of the daily quests mentions that they're quite prone to aether sickness due to their natural aptitude for manipulating their aetherial flow, so maybe it's something to do with that.

Basically they're regular video presentations (every few months or so) where the producer shows off new and upcoming things for the game. They're usually in Japanese without an official English translation provided, so not quite as big a deal as they could be, but of course there are fan translations.

The next one will be at Tokyo Fan Fest on March 23.

Moogle's poms have existed in almost all of their versions (except 3 and 7). They're highly sensitive and might be sensory, but there's never any information. They're probably there just to look cute and distinctive. The moogles also have a strong desire to keep their poms supple and soft, probably being akin to a mane or a bird's crest, something that conveys status and health. In XIV they glow, so they might be attuned to aether or something?

Ah I see! Thank you, I will leave a question there and hope

Defs agree its to make them look cute, tho couldn't help but wonder if there was some more lore to them haha. Tho its interesting that they are still supposed to be fluffy in FFXIV, cause they defs dont look it.

There's a quiz question in FF13-2 that says the Moogles in that game use their crystals (where the others in the series' poms are) to fly and the wings are for show. Could it be the same for other Moogles?

XIV moogles use their wings for flying though. It's why we become slaves to the postmoogle because he had never seen a windmill before and injured a wing when he got too close and couldn't fly while it mended.

Maybe? But that's IX, and the moogles in this game have a wide variety of pom colors.

Aside from the Mogglesguard, who all have different colors, the forest-dwelling moogles all have red-orange poms and the ones that dwell in the Sea of Clouds all have pink-purple ones. This is all but stated to be a phenotype divergence created when the Sea of Clouds was isolated from the rest of the world. The Mogglesguard's aberrant colors are most likely a consequence of Good King Moggle Mog XIIth's influence.

... and I would again put forth the idea that they serve no real biological purpose but attracting mates. They have wings for flying!
