but ffxi's galka's lore was F**** fantastic
I dont think it is nice enough to make a playable race out of it.
Put the gender political bs on the side, it just looks like a fat clown, so no thanks, apart from few people it would not be played at all.
In theory I have no problem with it as long as it was done well. In practice, at this point in time I do think it wouldn't be a good idea specifically because it would be a flashing neon sign for aggressive people who only care about the genderless characters because they are genderless and nothing else. These people are super identitarian, impossible to satisfy, and prone to policing everyone in sight.
If it had been a few years ago I don't think it would have been an issue. FFIX was fine. Hopefully at some point in the future folks will chill and options like this will be possible to explore again without worry.
I know the exact arguments that would be made surrounding the subject by extremists too, to the point that I originally was going to explain them here. Decided not to because of length and because observing the Kafka trap can make you a target for it. There is no winning with this scenario.

How do the Anata reproduce now that you bring it up? Do they just have a egg laying season at some point in their lives? Or do they steal men from the villages to mate with lamia style?
Also you do have those male looking Ananta you fight in Shom Al Hard mode and around Hell's Lid... so there "could" be male Ananta we aren't aware of yet...
Rlly angry those arent playable i been wanting 2 place a snake race for years and closet is au ra
Depends on how the genderless race behaves, looks like. In most media the genderless race always looks feminine. I reckon some players might not like this. Best way is to have a female and male character, everyone is happy this way.
If you could make the genderless race look like a woman or man, aka breasts or a beard etc, then I think it might work. But I wonder how the emotes would look like.
It was covered.... somewhere. Ananta tribe quests, or sidequests around their village perhaps. I think they might lay eggs without needing males to fertilise them. How do the Anata reproduce now that you bring it up? Do they just have a egg laying season at some point in their lives? Not going to go digging though all the scripts right now, but there's this from the one quest I tried...
ALPA
If you ask me, this “love” thing all seems rather sssilly. As far as I can tell, it leads to a lot of unnecessary bother.
Also worth noting that they may be some kind of Allagan genetic experiment, seeing how many of them are around Azys Lla and other Allagan ruins.
Apart from pronouns, we already have one. It's impossible to tell a male Lalafel from a female. Case in point: Ejika in Eureka is male, but you can make a female lala look exactly like him. Also I always forget this when I see him in a cutscene.
Beyond that, as was mentioned, adding in additional gender options will require a lot of work for little payoff as the playerbase who would explicitly want this likely make up a small fraction of the overall player base. It's best for the game as a whole to spend effort, when large amounts of effort are required, in creating content to benefit the majority of players than to be something for a small number. It's just not a good return on their investment to as Square to spend a lot of their time and money on content that would not bring more money back into the game, or that people would quit the game if it wasn't implemented.
What a weird question.
What will they look like? How will they function?
You're not giving me enough information to work with.
