Regular games: I agree, see what they look like first.

MMO expansions: I mean you're already paying for the sub, it'd be a shame if you couldn't actually play the latest content. If you know you're going to be playing it, because you know, it's an MMO and that's how they work, then by all means pay the inevitable now instead of later and get more for your money.

Pretty much anyone who's playing FF XIV kind of needs to get the expansion, it doesn't really matter if they put down the money for it now, or in 5 months at release....
