Is that why so much of this thread is people discussing male viera? Because nobody cares? Or maybe YOU don't care and you're failing to understand that other people care about things you don't? Nobody's taking your precious Fran viera away from you by talking about dudes. Stop projecting onto everyone else.

Evidently the people in this thread do, some of them specifically, but I'm just here because I'm interested in the discussion about what future designs might go into the game.

And regardless of what Viera "should" or "shouldn't" be, I would find it quite strange for them to only introduce one gender of a gendered race. Humans and human-like races - and rabbits, for that matter - come in male and female forms.

And some people just like picking rare and unusual character designs, myself included. (Yes, I realise the irony of saying this with a female Midlander avatar, but I have alts.)

I'd be inclined to pick a male Viera exactly because the "normal image" of the race is female.

But that particular concept art is pretty much a Viera kid. It's not too far off from the Miqo'te children in design, which are confirmed to be children.

We were outright told during the LL that showed that concept that it was one of the designs they considered for viera. That would have been the race, not just children.

Galka are exclusively male and reproduce by some sort of reincarnation :3

Apparently the wiki says they're male, I was always under the impression they were genderless but eh either way lol.

The game never goes into explicit detail, naturally, but all Galka are referred to as "he" and some form romantic pairings with female characters (most notably, Raogrimm). Given that NONE of the races "evolved" in any sense of the word (they all sprung fully-formed from the tears of Altana), it's entirely possible that Galka came into being as males, even if there's no good reason for them to be male.

Isn't gender locking races/ classes also one of the most universally hated design decisions in MMOs for playerbases? A lot of people cited it as a reason for leaving TERA, when new classes started being cutesy-young-girl only. Not that I really think it holds any major weight for the FFXIV design team regarding the Viera's implementation, but they've been refreshingly egalitarian in that regard, including some outfits. Just based on their history, I'd be surprise it was locked despite the lore because it would seemingly contradict what they've already established thus far. Personally I'm more-so holding out for Fran style buns rather than whether males would be present, but I would think it's dumb if it ends up being that way. One thing I really appreciate about FFXIV is the cat bois. You just don't see it anywhere else.

Being able to play as a cat boy was one of the main reasons I started playing. Everywhere I looked in the MMO landscape there were gender locked races, race locked classes/jobs (???), all male options being bulky and hypermasculine... and then there was XIV. I'm not sure why it's so rare for an MMO to offer all possibilities on a single character, but here we are. Gender locking a race at this point would be incredibly boneheaded of SE so I don't believe all the doom and gloom about getting male buns. Whether or not there will be a cute option is another story.

It is a real shame there is a lack of femmeboy options in this game. I feel like with Male Au Ra they added another large male type so they should add a skinnier and smaller one this time around imo.

I'm only disappointed we aren't actually getting viera but hyurs with bun ears, viera have long lanky kong arms and long fingernails and animal feet, Fran didn't, she uses the same MALE hands as everyone else and her arms are shorter than in XII, and I'm not expecting the playable ones to be any different.
