People, let's not escalate. Remember freedom of expressing personal aesthetic values goes both ways. Gender lock is an aesthetic value, not an attack on people themselves and vice versa.

The issues that we have today in real life are due to people who went out of their way to villify people's lifestyle choices. In all camps.

The thing is people who don't want to conform to someone else's standards would feel like it is an attack because the preferences of another person is being forced on them.

No one but the player themselves should have a say in what gear and hairstyles they have access to. We all play the same game. Then we should all have equal access to all the goodies.

I also dipped out of this thread because it was just going to turn into a mess, but I just have to step in to say that...

Most of the armour is unisex in every sense of the word. Heavy plate looks the same on EVERYONE. Metal sheets don't exactly highlight femininity very well and still look like actual armour and not battle bikinis. Robes are also unisex. It's very hard to be either traditionally masculine or feminine when you are in a big sack of cloth.

    ----

Also, men look great in dresses. Look up Ezra Miller's latest photoshoot for GQ. That is a handsome, fashionable boy if I do say so myself.

It might be just me but, I'd think a good course of action would be trying to minimize the gender discrepancies between sets as much as possible for regular sets in the game... and design glamour-oriented sets with equal balance between masculine and feminine silhouettes, but gender unlocking them every time.

So, with the benefit of option, everyone is pleased.

And this is why I feel like my male character has just as many costume options as my female one. Possibly more for suiting the fantasy setting and/or my taste in costume design.

But I won't post any further in this subject, because it seems that it's going in circles. As long as you keep your convictions out of harming anyone, it's fine.
Explain to me how keeping things gender locked hurts ANYONE. Please! I really want to hear this.

You're really okay to tell me that your happiness is bound to someone else's misery? Call it audacity then.
I thought you were done posting? My happiness is bound to someone else's misery? You must have taken the gold on the mental gymnastics team. You can best believe I will call that audacity because taking my words to mean something entirely different than my intention in order to establish a point on your part falls precisely under that definition. If you want me to respect a person's choice to be who they want to be (which I do), I suggest giving some of that respect yourself. Respect and support are not synonymous. These peeps have one of those from me, but not both.

I support the devs decision to keep things gender locked because it lines up with my views on traditionalism. I have every right to voice that support on these forums just as much as those who support lifting the restrictions. Feel free to disagree to your heart's content, but if you think it is ok to suggest that I just remain quite, it most certainly isn't.

I haven't read the entire thread so if this has been hit already my apologies! But honestly I'd like to lend my two cents here, coming from other character customization games.

Dragon Age: Inquistion and Dragon Age II, if you don't have mods you are completely unable to use any kind of dress options. There are six or so variations of bald heads in Inquisition and most of the hairstyles are greasy, masculine, or so badly styled they're unusable for all intents and purposes.

Dragons Dogma you can wear dresses and the character customization is decent, but the dresses are kind of frumpy and dying isn't an option.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls, solid character customization but to my knowledge no dresses and certainly no dying. The game is so dark and full of death though there's not a lot of room for customization to be anything but a detail.

I could list other games too. The vast majority don't have a single dress or skirt available, much less other feminine articles or clothing. Coming to FFXIV where there are MANY highly customizable feminine options, including dresses and skirts and bows and all of that, is a godsend. Seriously, don't take it for granted.

I'd love to see some female character-based clothing items. People mentioned Yuna and Lightning, but honestly imagine LULU from FFX. I suspect part of the issue is that alas, it's widely socially acceptable for girls to wear guy clothing but the reverse tends to get weird reactions. I think the dev team could make adaptations of the designs for men and it would look cool, but it wouldn't be as straightforward largely as the male-to-female adaptations are. I think it would be worth the effort personally, but I'm one fan and it's not my call.

Sorry to say this dude, but none of those are traditionally feminine. Like not at all lol, especially during those eras. You won't hear any complaints from me if sets like these were released and gender locked for males. Are you going to post more kilts, healed boots, and other gender neutral attire? And actually, I wouldn't even say these outfits are gender neutral. They are definitely designed for males to wear.
