I think peoples tastes will skew the number of styles they find were made for male characters, female characters, and generic everybody. imo:It seems more of the male hairstyles added in are contemporary Japanese male hairstyles that will look more feminine to my perspective.
...
This is exactly what I'm saying, thanks for posting the hairstyles. Of the 22 here, 13 look like they were designed with female characters in mind while the other 9 are either male or unisex, even if those hairstyles were all intended to be male or unisex.
blues are what I'd imagine on a male anime character, pink for females, green for either or.

My main gripe with the hair isn't the gender lock, though I can see why that is a big issue with most people. My big gripe is with Ramza's ponytail. Possible spoiler ahead, though if you are on this thread you probably completed the raid.
When the press images for the new hair styles first came out each had two characters with their respective style. In the male version their is a lalafell showcasing Ramza's hair. Based on his angle you should be able to see the ponytail, but none is visible in the image at all. When I tried the style on, I had to adjust the camera a ways to "hide" it.
I was excited, cause this looked like the first hairstyle I'd be able to use in forever. What really helped was that the lala in the image has red hair as do I, so it helped me see it more clearly from the start.
The other half of that gripe can be seen at the end of the raid, when we meet the original Ramza. He has the same hairstyle, without the ponytail. But sadly SE didn't think to grant us this luxury.
While I understand the gender issue, I at least hope we get Ramza's ponytail-less version soon. Maybe make that one gender neutral.

I hope for this too. I personally don't like using any hairstyle with a pony tail or that's longer because of how they tend to clip through collars and other clothing, and 100% would have preferred cutscene original Ramza hairstyle to story arc ponytail Ramza hairstyle. This seems a simple change that they could easily introduce if asked since the model for the hair already exists and most of the work to making it fit onto character models of other races would have already been done.My main gripe with the hair isn't the gender lock, though I can see why that is a big issue with most people. That's prettymuch my take on it as well. I'd mark the "Hien-inspired" one as blue though - it doesn't look feminine at all to me.
Additionally, as far as "intended gender design" goes...
- the second style in the second (first full) row is Urianger's hairstyle
- third row: the braid and pompadour are male designs from the hairstyle contest
- fifth row: first two are the WoL's hairstyles from the Stormblood trailer

Oh one thing that might help make us feel better, though it's a separate topic entirely. Is that in a recent interview egi-glamours were touched on for 5.0. I know it's not hairstyles, but that combined with the bunny outfit, and the fairer distribution of gender locked items, does show that they are listening. The time frames may feel off for us. But we aren't developing the game and have no idea the challenges they face. Has SE met my expectations on ever level, no, but I can't say they don't stop trying.

I like helping people with their Job ideas, it's fun to help them visuallize and create the job they'd like to play most. Plus I make my own too, I'll post them eventually.

I also thought that one looked better! Right from the start I thought his ponytail looked very "stuck on" and it didn't sit quite right - so I wonder if they modelled the short version first and then added it.
Tried to make the same color map for the non-default hairstyles, after all they can be accquired as well. The last 3 ones in the 3rd row (scions) are gender locked too.

I don't mind that they gender-lock hairstyles, in a general sense. There are a lot of them total and certain ones will rarely if ever be picked for the gender they're not "intended" for anyway.
What I do find ridiculous is the seemingly random pattern with which they seem to determine which hairstyles are locked and which aren't. The pompadour is available for female characters, while Ramza's hairstyle isn't, for instance.

Very disappointed I can't use Ramza's hairstyle. I bought Alma's just for completion sake. I don't see myself ever using it.
There is no need for these to be gender locked. Alma's may have a ribbon but there are numerous examples of men wearing the same style in times past. Never mind how some significantly more feminine styles aren't gender locked.
