Completely personal opinion here, but I think it would be fun to have Gunblade as a tank and their 'tank stance' use more blade-based skills while their 'dps stance' use more gun-based skills. (Though obviously I'm talking about the 'optimal' usage of the skills, but the majority of them still being able to be used in either stance.)

    Why, though?

Melee DPS players (myself included) just got Samurai this last expansion. This seriously sounds like a case of "I know I just got this cool new toy, but now I want this other cool new toy because the old one's not new anymore."

If you're a DPS player you already have 9 different options for cool, interesting jobs to level covering the entire spectrum. Hell, there are 4 current melee jobs, to the 3 total tanks. And you're really trying to say that, at this point in time, we need another melee DPS?

EDIT: Aw crap, I replied to a Super Bee Brian post. You check these things before posting. Move along everybody.

That's the thing. Sword makes one think of either knight or samurai. And samurai aside, knights are exactly what a "tank" is. In grand majority of games in existence, the western sword users are the most defensive-oriented jobs...or rogues sort of classes with daggers, knives and at best short swords.

Then you clearly never played Final Fantasy VIII. Gunblade never was a ranged weapon in it, not at all. The entire deal with it was additional damage done in MELEE attacks if you pushed the trigger as the attack hits. Basically the gun is for point-blank secondary attacks while swinging the sword. That is very much tank-viable.

The gunblade would be an explanation for the mandatory one or two ranged attacks that all tanks have (Unleash, Shield Lob etc.), with all the other gun skills being abilities. Aka. skills that are used "during the swing", pretty much. That is the exact same flavor that the weapon have in Final Fantasy VIII. Having weaponskills that use the gun for ranged attacks is breaking the flavor of gunblade, not being faithful to it.

Well said. Even as recent as Dissidia gunblades worked the same way. Squall would use the shot at close range.

if mtk absolutely MUST be a dps the one that makes the most sense with the garlean method of using it is actually heavy armor, a couple shots while closing distance, and then close to mid range combat

so the most ideal setup given what we know is the anti red mage, uses the prototank maim set and stays in close but has some disengage and midrange slug attacks that get them out of the fray before charging back in

but yeah, i really hope theyre a tank

I like the idea of them being either called Soldier (FF7 reference) or Magitek Knight as it sounds kind of cool, and I'd like to see them be a tank because last time it was DD. I understand the desire to have a job in a style you like but imo, I hope it's tank.

Also another hope is if they could somehow change the tank stance system, not sure how they'd do it without making it hard to balance but that's a core line in all the tanks that I'm wondering if they could get rid of/remix without making the job UP or OP. (Say for example on interval his gun is charged up and using this interval power for tanking or damage purposes could be a way to balance out the lack of an actual stance dance?).

When Samurai was first teased, I was a strong advocate for it being a Tank on merit of the real world lore of the job and it's romanticized lore connected to Bushido.

Samurai (or Bushi) were the warriors of pre-modern Japan. They later made up the ruling military class that eventually became the highest ranking social caste of the Edo Period (1603-1867)
The unwritten Samurai code of conduct, known as Bushido, held that the true warrior must hold that loyalty, courage, veracity, compassion, and honor as important, above all else. An appreciation and respect of life was also imperative, as it added balance to the warrior character.

What we got was a Ronin. So much for Bushido, so much for Samurai...

Predictably que times were a mess, and at the start Samurai brought very little to parties due to having great DPS but no utility. With many flocking to it due it being not only a new (highly requested)job and easily one more simple jobs/ roles to play(well).

I wont pretend that Gunblade has a any long standing lore to denote it's traditional roots as a storied hero who stands on the front lines protecting others, living by a code of honor, strength, and sacrifice. However i will remind all that in order to remotely entice people to Tank, there needs to be some incentive. We were ignored job wise in Stormblood, to do so again isn't only unfair, but incredibly self destructive. People can claim Jobs don't bring people to roles, however as i am a Dark Knight main, i know it's what made a Tank.

Everytime i hear people whine about wanting more DPS jobs i can't help but think, you really don't want to be as epic as this guy?

I've played a bunch of Final Fantasy XIV and they use gunblades to shoot people all the time in that one.

True, but there are different types of gunblades. The ones you're speaking of seem to be standard issue for the Garlean infantry. Others, including Regula, Nero (though not recently) and Gaius (presumed dead story wise) seem have some fancier gear.
