No, the upgraded engine ARR uses is something of a Frankenstein. It's referred to in interviews as a 'sibling' to Luminous, but it isn't the actual engine by any means.

It's pretty true though. I edited a link into my post of an interview Yoshida gave regarding the matter.

And yet has nothing to do with Crystal Tools - the engine that 1.0 used (and FFXIII and it's ilk as well). A number of character and gear models and designs that originated in 1.0 have been reused, but they are rendered in the new engine, not 1.0. The lack of fancy bells and whistles such as better environmental animations is a design choice made to allow the game to be run on more modest computers rather than making the game exclusive to only those with $5000+ high end gaming rigs (a fault that 1.0 was derided for, only making the game playable on for-the-time high-end PCs).

The whole 'system limitations' meme is getting tired, as it doesn't really take into account all the pros and cons for 'improvements' to the graphics.

They could easily implement interactive foliage in the game, and make it an optional setting, ran client side. It has nothing to do with server limitations, because such interaction is calcutated by the client.

It is also not very demanding, many games have it and it doesn't impact performances much. Even Wow has an implementation of it.
The same debate can be had with AA and textures quality.

At this point, the only reason we don't have this expected settings in a AAA game is the lack of will to do so from the Dev team.

    Ok...

I'm entering a chaotic state of confusion..

One side says it's not possible due to the server or engine
    Another says it's completely possible

To be more precise, servers don't handle the graphics part of the game. This is why you can use reshade or edit in game textures directly on your computer.

Putting those improvements directly in the game is totally doable, and make them optional so it doesn't hut people with lower end computers.

It all comes down to the dev team in the end, whether or not they want to improve the graphics of their product so it looks more like a AAA MMO.

So you believe it should already be done but it's not
And why is it not being done?

I believe this should be done for the next expansion at least, just like when we got DX11 for HW. And I mean adding nice features like interactive foliage or higher res textures. The list could go on and on, better lighting, more polygons on new models, rework of existing models, dynamic clothes / hair etc. Every MMO needs a graphic overhaul every 3-4 years. Aion did it, Wow did it, Black Desert (which was already miles ahead in terms of graphic quality). I think ShadowBringers is the perfect moment to do so for FF14.

And about the Anti Aliasing part however, it should have be done since 2.0. It is really a basic feature that has been existing for ages. The one we got is not a proper implementation of it.
