It was called 'transmogrification' in World of Warcraft, and was in patch 4.3 ... 7 years ago. In Blade & Soul your appearance is wardrobe gear -- and it doesn't have stats in any case, although some of will flag you for PvP. Guild Wars 2, the Elder Scrolls Online, Wildstar all have some form of glamours. It's also a major way F2P MMOs make money - selling appearances. It's expected these days.

You've either had limited exposure to wardrobes and glamour systems in other MMOs or you just didn't look for them when you played them.

Alas, I can't transmog cloth gear on a Hunter in World of Warcraft no matter how much I want to wear that barbarian loincloth ...

There are always some restrictions. I am encouraged that SE asked us for gear suggestions we'd like to glamour that are't generic or our current job. I also understand that changing everything except AF gear isn't going to happen -- the code changes necessary to do something like that would require a complete redesign of parts of the game, which, hmmmm, happened in World of Warcraft with the release of Cataclysm back in 2010 - a year before transmog popped up.

At the very least they could remove the class restrictions from the pvp vendor gear. It's all stat-less, Lv1 glamour gear anyways.

XIV literally takes exact same models from XI and pastes them in here. All 5 starter races directly inspired from XI. Hyur is Humes, Miqo is Mithras, Lalas are Tarutaru, Roes are Galkas, Elezen are Elvaans.
So don't kid yourself there is plenty of similarities between XIV and XI in many terms.

Also some of those 50 armors in XIV are taken directly from XI.
Copy and paste models are all well and dandy, but many of the game's mobs in both games have existed for decades. Morbols, Tonberries, Drakes, Ahriman, Gigas, Behemoths, among many, many others have all been around a really long time. There is almost some kind of reiteration of nearly every mob in the game that comes from a previous FF installment.

And If you're talking lv50 AF armor, most of those are inspired from previous FF games dating before XI. Some back as far as FFI. FFXI took from those concepts. I won't even give you races. They are all humanoid, which is what the playable characters in the franchise have always been.

I strongly suggest looking outside XI before telling me to stop kidding myself. Reading your post sounds like someone who thinks they know Batman after watching Batman Begins.

the most annoying part of this is the artifact gears on crafters. Many of them look amazing, and one of the cloth line that look consistently good through all 3 expansions. But the restriction means I never use any of them.

I know the Chinese made the mistake, but that is the same thing as allowing PLD artifact gear being worn by anyone. Let the specific classes/jobs keep their gear. Limit it to opening up subgroups like DoH, maiming, and so on.

The real problem is crafters cannot use such glamours without taking up 8 of their 10 plate slots.

    I'm 100% for LESS restrictions!
Job specific gear can stay that way! There are so many amazing pieces of gear tho that would be really fun to mix and match with!

I'm also under the idea that there shouldn't be a level restriction on glamours.
Example: I am playing my BLM to level it and I have a bunch of level 10-15 level gear, I'd be able to get into playing it more if I could make it look cooler with the higher level gear I've collected with my SMN!

While the earlier levels tend to roll by quickly, my BLM is stuck being an eyesore and I just cain't get behind leveling it as much as I'd like.

I would hope that crafters can still use glamour prisms on current gear -- the fact that we have glamour plates does not mean we have to use them. The prisms should still work fine. You just have to store the original gear somewhere ...

The plate slots still aren't enough if you include DoL, and most omni crafters are going have those maxed out too. I'm not there yet in SB, but in HW I used the scripted gear for anything 2-star and below, and melded ironworks for recipes above that. I had to allocate 14 slots of armory space per gear slot to pull that off, but the gear was just too damn nice to just let sit there after farming up all those damn scrips, and also too nice NOT to farm the scrips for them. Ugh!

I'm perfectly ok with keeping the DoH/DoL gear restricted to those classes, but they need to add additional plates and space to the glamour dresser. At the very least an additional amount to accommodate the hardcore crafters and gatherers out there. In a recent link someone provided, Yoshi stated that they are working on expanding accessibility to the dressers, and expanding where we can apply the plates first before expanding the amount that can be stored. So I guess it's still going to be some time. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be before 5.0.

I didnt read any of the posts besides the OP's but something like this existed in the game during 1.0 before they changed the gear to be "dated" youd see mages with heavy armor and tanks with light armor hence why lyse used to wear sabatons and papalymo wear gauntlets. Im not saying it was a bad system but more over I think it should be restricted to glamor dresser items.

The day I can wear Amon's Hat on Warrior is the day I know that FFXIV truly is the game for me.
