By that logic, DRG is built on angsty DRG quests and Monk on guiding lost princes and redeeming their students.

Skill acquisition, unless unable pivotal to a fight before which they cannot be acquired, has little to no bearing on combat gameplay. Only the latter part matters. What do we choose to use to fit the situation?

Most people didn't play Quina just to eat things. They played Quina because of the extreme variety in high value skills s/he/it brought. It's the toolkit, not the means of acquisition, that ultimately define BLU.

Does that mean I'd be content with quest-based acquisition? Probably not; I think the acquisition method offers too much valuable excuse to improve upon the open world and old content to forgo the opportunity, and I highly suspect they toolkit size would be reduced if given through job quests (unless they were pseudo-quests that amount to little more than Hunt Marks, but now complete with progress and directions to ensure people know what they're missing). But neither would I be content with an overly limited or redundant set of monster skills acquired through defeating specific enemies, either, because that, too, diminishes the toolkit itself.

100% agreed. Blue Mages of the past (in Final Fantasy games) worked with your party in combat which is why I'm not a fan of the No Duty Finder restriction.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
