Datacenters: A Plea For Community Building, Not Fracturing

People are complaining about their communities being torn apart, but didn't they say there will be a 2 week period of free world transfers? If you want to be together so bad, go join them! I've been looking to get off Primal for a while (certain worlds seem to be full of people that really ruin the fun), but I had no interest in moving over to Aether. So to see that I can leave Primal and join a data center that has the world a friend of mine is on (which was previously in Aether) makes me look forward to hopping over to Crystal when the time comes.

The fracturing is up to the people who I guess don't care enough about their friends to join them. It's not that deep.

Its an inconvenience, but you can move servers without losing much. Even if you own a house, you can store your furniture in retainers, get a full refund plus 3mil, and because of the upheaval there's bound to be empty plots coming up on your destination server.

The only issue I see is if you have several friends all on different servers, soon to be different datacentres, and the choice of which friends to stick with.
If those friends are all friends with each other, you should be able to come to a group arrangement.
If not then you've got problems.

Yeah exactly. It would be a Big Problem if everyone had to shell out $18 to transfer, but if everyone can coordinate and decided on where to go, then there's very little to lose. Just like moving in real life. It sucks, and you gotta haul a bunch of stuff around, and get re-situated, but it's not that bad.

One Retainer can hold 175 items. You have two without paying extra, so that's 350 inventory slots. Lets just assume you're not using that inventory space for anything else for... No well explained reason... When they announced this I figured I'd go count my furniture, just in case, turns out I've got well over 700 pieces to shift if I do want to move... It's a smart ploy by SE to not only inconvenience us (don't even get me started on re-placing all the furniture after just getting things how I liked...), but potentially have us shell out extra for more Retainers...

I'm just praying that SE is smart enough to lock Housing down for the two week period... Particularly with EU where we're getting new servers and thus entirely new Housing Wards... If there's a mad dash to snap up new plots, then this will be very ugly IMO... If they disable the ability to purchase plots for a while... People can spread out more efficiently, at least with regards to getting a plot... I mean they need to do that just for Free Companies alone... Anyone moving server as a Free Company will be reset to Rank 1 and need to grind up to Rank 6 just to purchase a plot, in which time all the plots will be purchased by individuals...

I don't think anyone is saying there'll won't be a need for compromise and sacrifice. We all empathize. As with most things that affect a group, it's not just on us as an individual but on the group's choices collectively.

With free transfers and full housing refunds, it seems the remaining inconveniences are too high a price for some in your group to continue playing together.

The new servers are only coming at/after 5.0. That's what they said.
