How would that be any proof they're cutting corners, if you don't know if they're getting cheap ones when better and more expensive ones are available? How is buying extra servers for a second/third datacenter cutting corners in itself?
They are making a new lobby server in each data center, a new lobby server (for login) and duty finder server (for instances) is a lower number of additional hardware used than upgrading 24 game servers + DF server.
Since this drama started because of someone trying to deflect my point to a different argument, I thought it might be worth while to show this in this thread:
So what do you think PvP will happen on the 3 NA DC's? We should be upgrading servers, (and fixing w/e else that gives them that sluggish feel) not cutting corners and making more DCsThose 4.1 numbers really hammer home how potentially pointless this whole split is... We really need this kind of split when an expansion has little over a 50% retention rate in players? Boy am I glad I get to lose friends and housing so there is more room for a bunch of players that aren't even going to stick around... Guess this is the MMO version of "New customers get the better deal!"
At least the raiding community will be healthy on both sides, but it's still going to be smaller and that will create issues... Chaos always felt like a good example of why XIV should have single regional based data centers, rather than multiple data centers per region. Just look at how active Feast is on Chaos compared to the rest of the world (at the time of writing, 10 players have reached Diamond tier, 7 of which are on Chaos), and that's PvP, nobody even does that and it's more active on Chaos because we're all in one place... That should be the future, not more splits... That kind of future costs too much though, I guess... I'm sure it's a much more sound investment to put more money into DLC to cancel in the future, that'll make more money back somehow... Knowing SE, XIV is on the "make do and mend" portion of its life (oh wait, that's been the case since launch), and Final Fantasy XVI Online is getting nice new quality servers instead of us...
There are no 14 million players if SE is lucky there are 1 million or a bit more. They only count characters which includes alts, rmt bots and even players who didn't play in years. You should know that by now since you are registered since 2011.
S-E don't want to split people from their friends. If they could keep stuffing a growing population into the same number of datacenters with no performance degradation, they would. Complaints about DC split is like the complaints about Balmung world being closed to new characters. You wouldn't like the results if they left populations unmanaged until the game experience is badly impacted by lag and frequent server crashes. Players need to be understanding that worlds and datacenters can only have a finite capacity before performance is impacted. S-E are offering a period of free transfers so players can try to find the best fit with their friends. That's really the most they can feasibly do to help with the inevitable split.
Did they ever mention if trading would be allowed while not on your home world?
Because if you can still trade, then I'm truly convinced SE has no idea what they're doing because that's just begging to be abused for RMT and other purposes.
You can buy on other world's MBs but you can't sell anything and I think retainer access is limited.
