The devs have created a freaking huge amount of gender locked cosmetic gear obtainable in-game and in the mog station. We even had some more added recently, and we'll get even more in the future. It just so happens that only two out of the lot are of non-xiv female characters. This claim that the devs don't have incentive to create female outfits is simply false...because why would they consistently create them if they didn't? There are even gender locked hairstyles with some of those outfits.

Also a gigantic amount of characters are female, I'd wager more than half are. It's in SE's interest to give them more things to wear that are made for them and not just hand-me-down sets of men's clothes when it comes to non-xiv FF characters, because frankly they could make a lot of money from it. I have been wearing my Yuna outfit a lot recently on two characters and I have gotten pms asking me where I got it, and each of these people were disappointed to find out it's no longer obtainable. Some of them may have bought it if the option was still there.

If SE can redesign male clothes to be usable by female characters, then surely they can do the reverse. We have male bunny outfits now, and very few FF character outfits can boast being more stereotypically feminine than that, or more sexualised than that. The bunny outfit is literally one step away from letting males wear bikinis. So if SE can do that, why can't we get something much more modest like Rinoa's outfit?

They already design most of the healer and much of the caster gear to be rather feminine (even on male characters, I'd say to the detriment of consumer experience).

I was looking at it from the point of in-game items, because why anyone would ever want something added to mog station instead of in-game is beyond me. Of course the devs have incentive to create female gear for the mog station, because they see direct profit from that.

100% agree. I think gender locking any gear makes no sense, and only limits the options we have available.

Touche. Women's clothing looking bad on men is a social stigma anyways.

One thing that has to be said though is that the reason they probably have released more Male FF costumes over the Female is that Women will look just as good as Men in those costumes and require minimal modification than the other way around lets face it Women look good in almost anything where as it just doesnt work the other way just coming out plain wrong. Men just do not look good in the female costumes it mostly does not work. To take Tifa's costume for example a tank top and mini skirt just doesnt work for men it they would have to change parts of the costume to actually look decent on a male body most likely replacing the tank top with a sleeveless shirt and mini skirt with some shorts. It would be nearly bringing out a seperate costume.

I hate that concept almost as much as I hate gender locking gear. If they were to make Aymeric's outfit "suitable for females" by giving it a mini skirt and a boob window, people would rightfully throw a fit. They don't want to wear a "female version" of Aymeric's outfit, they want to wear Aymeric's outfit! I know can't stand when I get a piece of gear, expecting it to be one thing, and then it morphs into something completely different because my character is male.

I said earlier that guys would be upset if "reward" gear were designed for females, but you know what? With the new system for trading in achievement points, there's really no reason they can't add Tifa and Rinoa and Garnet's outfits to Jonathas' list of items. Not only do the male equivalents already exist, but if they made it so both genders could use those outfits, it would deflate the sails of would-be complainers, since they wouldn't technically be female-exclusive.
