Question about loot etiquette

I wasn't aware there were rules or etiquette for this sort of thing. Besides rolling Need, the rest is pretty much up to the RNG crystal mages so anything is fair game. Can't recall ever seeing someone announce their plans for gear though; that's a first.

Rules around things like this have existed for years, to varying degrees, with the usual basic idea being that if you're looking to use it to make a profit, then you're in a "greed" situation not a "need" situation.

The key part there though is the "varying degrees" element - some games and communities stick by these rules of etiquette, with a range of consequences from just chiding them for not letting it go to someone who could use it for a gear upgrade (by far the most common in my experience) to much more serious responses.

Of course, the "well they might need the gold/gil" as a rebuttal has existed for just as long, though I personally believe the weight that carries depends on the context of the group (static vs pug, group of friends, etc) as well as the ease with which one can obtain the item. If it were in a game where it's a major upgrade that the group had been trying to get for one or two people for several weeks, and getting drops from raid bosses happens only once a week, etc., then I would see the "well I need money" as not holding the same kind of priority as needing it for gear upgrades.

Here, where it's easy enough to farm and you can keep at it till you get the item you need (and gil for crafted gear/materia overmelding might actually be a legit means of getting good/BiS gear)? Not worth more than an eye roll and maybe an emoted /sigh in their direction.
