Being able to roll Need never stopped me from saving the item for desynth, glamour, or company seals. It simply gave the very logical priority to people running a role to gear up that role, opposed to someone who didn't even have those jobs leveled.
And I'd gladly farm 8-player raids over 24-player raid where I don't even have the Need privilege simply because farming it is that much less of a train-wreck.

Ah, fair enough then, if that's how it went down, then it's understandable why you got a bit mad, especially with the "your bolts" bit.

He might of meant your in a general term though, and (based on your recollection) you didn't ask if you could have the bolts, and still left without really talking about it. It could have been handled better, and your actions could have still hurt your friend. When in doubt, talk it out. :P

Is it considered acceptable in FFXIV to need on something you are going to sell? In previous MMORPGs I've played the general rule has been that you need on items you are going to use yourself and greed on those you're going to sell. Needing for alts or equippable NPCs is kind of a gray area.
Why are you entitled to drops more than anyone else? You "needing" an upgrade is no one else's concern. If they want to be nice and pass, that is their prerogative but should neither be expected nor demanded. If you want a better way to secure drops, put up a PF and agree to run everything multiple times until everyone gets something. If we want to get technical, you don't "need" that bolt. You want it as you could purchase an accessory from the Market Board. And if you don't do Savage, it's entirely irrelevant since i360 destroys either of the new dungeons.

You mean when people wouldn't dare risk wasting their only roll that week on gear they couldn't use.

Or when people were given a fair and equal chance at gearing up their other levelled classes when their healer chest didn't show up for the seventh run that day?

I absolutely welcomed the Greed Only rule, because when I couldn't get my goddamn healer top because 24-Man Raids hate healers, I could at least get a fair shot of getting gear for my SMN or DRK.

But hey, weird flex, but okay.

Oh... you dont raid, you say? Then you dont need that ilvl anyways.
These sorts of comments are repetitive and tiresome.

Raiders or not, ppl playing a video game always want to get more powerful. For many that's the whole point of playing. How many of you went ga-ga over Offering + Genji Glove 9999x8 hits in FF6 even though nothing in the game was hard enough to warrant it?

It seems you may not understand the difference between need and want.

If you want to beat the dps checks in some savage fights (or even simply survive some unavoidable damage without shielding) you'll need some gear above 380. Without it you'll die and not be able to complete the content. You can meld vit for the survabilitybut not only does it adversely impact your dps it may just not be enough. This isn't a situation you encounter elsewhere in the game. In terms of beating enrage your options are to gear up or be really, really amazing. Most people will never be skilled enough to beat Savage at minimum ilvl.

This isn't an issue in any other content. You can complete everything else in the game currently at 380 with quite a bit of breathing room.

So sure, gearing up feels good but it's entirely unnecessary for playing outside of enraged content.

I think their comment is coming not from confusing needing versus wanting gear, but more from the fact the quoted phrase "If you're not doing x, you don't need the gear" has a long, often negative history attached to it (even if in this case it was meant in a more neutral fashion, as evidenced by Vidu's later explanation). Too often it's been used by players to justify why they think other players don't deserve any access to gear above a certain power level, even months after the gear became obtainable and has been made obsolete by later tiers. I could be wrong, but I've been hearing/seeing that phrase for a long time now, used in various (but often too similar) contexts.

Seriously - I remember hearing basically that phrase personally back in 2007 when playing Burning Crusade in WoW.

I do. The comments are still repetitive and tiresome and don't serve any purpose other than to brush off other people's goals in the game. How would you like it if people belittled everything you wanted to achieve in the game as unimportant and unnecessary?

Here's the thing -- people don't care if it's necessary or not. They still want it.

Therefore people coming along being all like "but you don't NEEEEEEED it!" just comes off as condescending and superfluous.

I don't give a rat's arse that I never needed Offering + Genji Glove to beat anything in FF6. I still wanted it. And what I know I didn't want was some :V people on the internet telling me about how the game is so easy that I never needed to get those things. Dude, I know that. Still want them. Try telling me something I don't know, for a change.
