Probably due to RMT flooding the server.
Probably due to RMT flooding the server.

It only ruins it when it stays locked for a long time. As Mateus and other RP servers grow, the rush to get onto Balmung will slowly lessen and lessen. Eventually we very well might see a day when it's open all the time and has a more active new population, but for right now things are going slowly in the right direction.
Server locked lets blame RMT. Ya RMT is not the cause of the lock, you dont honestly think thousands of RMT bots are hording space on Balmung lol.
Note: Taking advice from a players alt, is like taking advice from a voice in a dark room. Criticism is a two way street remember that!!

What kind of nerd plays on Balmung?

It's actually a documented issue when Balmung opens up. We go get flooded because in the months where the server is closed RMT bots are slowly culled out of existence, which is reflected in the price of buying gold going higher and higher. Had a friend who would troll those sites for fun and the average price of selling gold for money on Balmung was hugely inflated compared to other servers for this very reason after a few months of being locked, only to drop again once new bots can get in. Soon as the server unlocks we get a shit ton of them trying to make money again before they get culled in a pretty consistent cycle. While they're not the bulk of the issue, they /are/ an issue.

Made an alt on balmung when it was open to start RPing someday when bored. However, after learning about the transfer incentives I transfered my alt to a preferred server for free to reap the rewards. Got myself a nice mount and happy about it even if I can't use it yet.
1/6th of the population are alts with Leaf on their heads who's mains are in other servers xD.
I remember when Mateus was a glorious dumpster fire. After seeing all the RP drama and social stigmas of various groups, I personally would like to go back sitting around the metal barrel and throwing a match in and just watching my server burn into toxicity.
At least back then we had a decent market if you could tip-toe around the 4 omni crafters of the server and you had proper frame rates in event areas. Not to mention at least some semblance of choice at buying a house.
Oh well, the dumpster fire was put out and now we have a wider array of folks. Its not all bad I suppose. I guess I'm just an old fart that enjoyed a smaller, quieter server.
