Trying to fight a DDOS attack is incredibly difficult, even with the best defenses they can cause havoc. The US Govt spends billions of dollars a month to mitigate and deal with DDOS attacks and there really good at it. SE doesn't have a war chest like that nor the resources of US Cyber Command to deal with them. There a business and there doing what they can with the help of the ISPs. Many websites deal with DDOS attacks by using massive caching servers all around the world, ala Akami. SE cant do that as you cant cache a MMO, thus they have to deal with it as best they can by filtering and blocking traffic. The ISPs will try and route you around the congestion as best they can but most of the links are going up and down due to the attack.

If that map is correct, at least I know I'm not crazy. It's hitting the east coast US as well and would explain an awful lot. Not as bad as EU, mind you, but certainly enough to cause problems.

Pretty much, if any company is the target of a ddos attack, there isn't much they can do apart from try to mitigate and wait it out.

What really annoys me is not that they can't fight back the DDoS attacks since it's pretty difficult to do so.
It's that they don't give compensation for the lost days.
Will they go bankrupt if they give 2-3 more days as compensation?

As bad as it is, it could be worse. I once played a game that apparently took the no account sharing portion of its TOS so seriously, that they went on a perma banning spree against many accounts following some DDOS attacks where many people turned to trying to connect using vpns, which apparently was taken as a sign of account sharing. So not only were people not compensated for lost game time, they were punished.

If this situation continues more than 1-2 weeks, they will lost subs.
Compensation of 3-5 days wont hurt them. Everybody who works in a company knows how loyalties work....

Its currently effecting all 3 datacenter locations. In that case, there isn't much SE can do about it. This isn't a server issue.

The problem is that at least Chaos has on going problems since 4.1. Its just that its much worse right now but it was never a stable server for quite some months now. So there seems to be a problem because before that one patch it was mostly fine.

while i havent experienced the current issue's due to being on holliday i have to say your statement certainly is false. Some people may have issue's with ff, but i for one certainly didnt have any problems with ff since 4.1, server is as stable as it ever was since migration.
I had more dc's when server was still in canada but thats only to be expected. Bigger distance more things that can go wrong.

I have the exact same issue. Once 4.1 dropped the lags and dc's started. The DDOS attacks are just "icing on the cake" -_-
