Ddos attacks are a lie though. Online service providing companies use the Ddos lie all the time when they have network issues.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

I realize that this might be hard to grasp, but....
No one can predict nor completely stop DDoS attacks from happening from any smuck that knows what they're doing. DDoS attacks happen to other businesses all of the time as well like Google and Amazon, you just don't hear it about it as often. I remember one year when the entire PSN was down around Christmas time.

Companies can lie.
IIRC 2016 was very bad for PSN, Poodlecorp were one of the responsible but there have been many others.
Anyway, no doubt SE have DDoS, I'm actually surprised it doesn't happen more but companies use the DDoS card all the time when there's network issues. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's not.
I should have said 'SE can lie'.

If you think every time a company claims that they have a DDoS attack is a lie, then perhaps you really need to read up more on DDoS attacks first before automatically playing the "every large corporate company is a dirty scoundrel and a liar because I can't my play game!" card.I realize that this might be hard to grasp, but....

Blizzard get DDoS attacks all of the time as well, however, they are a bit, and not by a long shot, a bit better at handling their servers than SE does.
I also am not that paranoid to think that every time I don't get what I want that a company is lying to me to save face. Does SE lie sometimes? It's possible.
Would they be lying about DDoS attacks? Probably not. It's bad for PR to have them period, why on earth would a company want to lie about having or not having one to begin with.

I don't say every time. There's DDoS attacks out there but I'm willing to bed my head on it that there have been times were there wasn't one when they said there was (Not only talking about SE here). If you think every time a company claims that they have a DDoS attack is a lie, then perhaps you really need to read up more on DDoS attacks first before automatically playing the "every large corporate company is a dirty scoundrel and a liar because I can't my play game!" card.

Guild Wars 2 and (insert any MMO or internet service company name here) have DDoS too, not sure what your point is.
Politicians and companies are 2 things that lie the most oh and salesman too. Please do raid the small unreadable letters whenever you're about to sign a contract.
To have something to say to your audience probably... 'guy's we screwed something up so the servers are a bit wonky' vs 'we have DDoS attacks', second would be best received.
I commute train to work every day and every day of course there's delays and bad ones most of the times. On a month of riding the train mon to fri I have heard that there's people on the tracks 15 times, there's objects or another train on the track a few times and rest of times was total silence. Now a good friend of mine works at the railway station on the signaling stuff, anyway he said that a lot of times they just say something like 'people on the tracks' so they have something to say.
This has nothing to do with DDoS or whatnot but it's an example to what I mean with companies can SOMETIMES say anything to shift the blame.
Don't forget that I say SOMETIMES, because it seems you take me letter by letter.
