Ok so there's something you have to keep in mind when you're going high res. Rendering load goes up exponentially with screensize. What can be overkill for 1080p can be inadequate for 1440p and utterly unplayable were you to consider 4k or such.

That being said, a 1080ti is plenty for 1440p on current gen games. 2000 series would be overkill. Going less than the 1080ti... is a bit borderline. Research specific benchmarks for the game and screen resolution you want on the card you're considering. That will tell you if it's 'enough'.

If you really want to upgrade your CPU then a i7-4790k should be more than good enough, buying a newer one would mean new mobo + new ram and other shenanigans, make sure you buy an okay aftermarket cooler tho, like a Noctua or a Scythe(cheaper option) because the 4790k runs very hot.
thanks, getting a used CPU here for a good price isn't possible because of the customs unless i smuggle it . i'm planning an upgrade maybe next year.
I guess the 3GB version is out of the picture. from what i read yes its too risky for the future.

    I guess 1070 is a minimum the 1440p. isn't 1080Ti needed for 4k or 144Mhz?

All these questions are "it depends".

I'd love to have a 1080Ti for playing Monster Hunter: World on 1440p, even though my monitor is only 60Hz.

If you're playing Overwatch, a 900 series card can push 1440p60hz easy.

FFXIV is somewhere in the middle. A 1070 is probably sufficient. But it's close enough I'd want to search for benchmarks to be sure.

thanks for all the input, now leaning towards MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 ARMOR OC 8GB GDDR5 , but gonna wait a little more, when the new 2xxx models are released maybe we get a little more discount, in a month or 2.

Yup, i got the 1070 on release and never regretted it, the prices are gonna drop as well as you said, the 1080/ti series is gonna drop a lot as well, if the price difference between the two is small then getting one of the higher series might be worth it. :3

980ti runs at 1440p on max settings for me with no issues.
