As you correctly identified, my comment was some good ol' quality hyperbole to help point out how ridiculous the argument of "It's just digital, bro!" is. These forums exist to chat about our adventures in a digital world, so that argument doesn't really hold much water, IMO.
I understand that many people don't care one bit about a scarf/event reward, but that doesn't invalidate the concerns being posted here. Trying to discredit and brush off someone's complaint as "it's just digital" doesn't really help the conversation.
On a personal note, my issue is not with the items themselves (the scarf, White Raven earring). My concern is more about the behavior behind doing it in the first place. I am perfectly OK with exclusive items existing in a game. The 1.0 earring was a far larger issue to me as that was a completely different game, and was a special treat that SE allowed to carry over into XIV for those players (I don't have one even though I'm legacy). Now they are starting to recycle past contest rewards. These were special items given to people who participated in various contests.
To me, it's a mix of them showing no appreciation to players who did participate in <whatever spawned the reward> and also a healthy dose of laziness. Why bother creating a new item to release when you can just pull past items that were previously exclusive, right?
