Sorry I didn't mean to dismiss or ignore anything.
Ultimate fights haven't been made any easier. Their ilvl locked, and as far as we know won't be unsyncable. These fights will retain their challenge and the rewards their merit. (at least unless SE decides to let us unsync these afterall)
Other 1.x items weren't part of a savage-like tier fight. They weren't even offered as a reward when signing up to do this. It was awarded to players covertly afterwords as thanks for doing the best of the best. By all accounts, it's a trophy status item. Ifrits Battleaxe is not a trophy item, for example. Sure it was in 1.0, but the fight was not intended to be near impossible like some others are.

Thing is that Ultimate is a completely new concept, we don't know how SE is gonna deal with it in the future, but we do know how they have dealt with every other challenging fight in the 4 years prior to Stormblood, and it goes in line with how they are dealing with Rivenroad. If Rivenroad is a savage-like fight then what they are doing is no different than what they have done with other savage-like fights, if anything I think the event is gonna take longer to complete than what it takes to do T9 unsynced. If Rivenroad was still accessible you'd probably be able to unsync it faster than any of the current coils just due to its age / item level tuning.

Speaking of the difficulty, only Amiral Benson tried to make a direct comparison to ultimate but kept citing server issues and pings as to why the fight was difficult, but that's not mechanic difficulty like our current ultimate. From what I've seen of the fight in videos it's closer to an XIV extreme primal than a savage fight and the main difficulty came from how terrible the game was at the time. If they were to add that same fight right now with the exact same mechanics but item level tuned to what we have now the fight wouldn't be hard at all.

    You're twisting my words ^^'

I said that among all the things (so many) that made that fight difficult, there was also the ping, but no server issues.
As for the mechanics, longer than Ultimate, requiring perfect execution as well, no telegraph, no cast bar, vertical arena, special items needed, party combos, mechanics not as complex as Ultimate yeah, but the thing is that you had to do them without all the help we get from the game today, and that changes everything.

I think lots of people here don't quite realise how challenging it was when you take everything into account, and why it's such a trophy we care about considering how much of our lives we put in it.

Like I mentioned, I cleared it as well as both Ultimate, and the one that took me the most time and investment was Rivenroad (Hard) by far, about 5 month, because of all the requirements when you're going there serious enough.

Allow me to explain, when you decide you want to clear Ultimate, you're not going to try that as a tourist, with bad gear, bad items, bad preparation, etc. it would not work, it would not be serious, you would jeopardise your group, everyone knows that.
But the preparation for Ultimate, the BiS gear up, the food and potions, they don't take a lot of time, they don't take much resources.

Lots of people complain on this forum since 2.0 about the fast obsolescence of gear, about the fact that when you get the best gear, there's no content to use it, etc.

In 1.0 that was the opposite. And therefore, if you wanted to try seriously Rivenroad (Hard), if you wanted to get invited in a group serious enough, you would not go there as a tourist. And that means you needed your Darklight set, your relic, crazy melds where back then, a meld failing and you were loosing everything, including your piece of gear!

Getting a full Darklight set was both long and quite difficult, you had dungeons way more dangerous than the today's ones, 8 man, taking about 40 min to clear, but if you wanted to have the secret chest at the end that could contain a piece of Darklight (~8% chance), you had to clear the Dungeon within 18 min!!! A crazy speed run demanding a perfect execution and strategy, requiring the party to change jobs multiple times inside the dungeon (because that was a thing). A single mistake, and the speed run was over, and you had a 30 minutes lock out on the dungeon.

    Continued in Part. 2

I’m not trying to devalue your accomplishment, but how could you invest 5 months into a piece of content that was only available for 3 months? Rivenroad (Hard) came out in Patch 1.23b, which was released 2012.08.13, and then the 1.0 servers all went offline on 2012.11.12. Again, not trying to devalue anything, but the times don’t add up, unless I’m missing something.

Differentiation. Personally, I think they should have added “Replica” to it, and I don’t really know why they didn’t... well, except I think it was just laziness. Guess they didn’t want to have to code another item in. I don’t know.

Well, there's a far better way to fix any and all differentiation issues from now until forever.

Put timestamps on achievements. The only caveat is that you need to create achievements for any potential feat, which SE is more or less doing anyway these days.

You can then differentiate people down to the minute at which they attained the achievement. If the point is differentiation, that is better than any potential item renaming can ever be and more efficient to boot, because it's automated. But it's hard to flaunt, you typically don't see people's achievements unless you look. And that, I think, would be the breaking point of that suggestion. I don't think it's about differentiation as such, I think it's more about the ability to throw that differentiation into people's faces.

All achievements have timestamps, but they are only visible in the lodestone.

I mean, the Lodestone already puts dates on your achievements. They just aren’t documented to the minute.

Heh, goes to show how much "I" care about this sort of thing. I didn't even know it was already a thing.

For the most part, I'll just consider my point proven then. For the most part, because I'm not sure if the Rivenroad in particular had an achievement tied to it that would allow differentiation. But even then, people aren't clamoring to get one, but rather want a change to the item, so I'm not sure if that actually changes much.

Just like we knew about Ultimate coming a year before its release, the dev team hinted and hyped us in 1.0 about the "final fight", with 2 difficulties, a normal one, and a challenging one.

The required gears to get into that fight seriously, were released during the spring, giving you some month to gear up before the fight get released in the summer, so that you could jump on it as soon as possible, to get a chance at clearing it before the servers shut down.
It was a race against the clock all along.

There are people who did everything for month, who fought with bravery, and didn't cleared it on time, still being in the fight during the final hours.

This is full of incredible stories. Some cleared it the last day, a 5-6 month race, they cleared it the last day, then head up on the Carteneau Flats for the big battle against the Garlemald XIVth Legion lead by The Black Wolf, Gaius van Baelsar.
A war hosted by GMs, with Dalamud growing above players heads, only to find out what was in Dalamud 1 min after the server shut down with the End of Era CGI video.

Those people, clearing it the final day, they went on a roller-coaster of emotions, they were crying tears of joy and sadness on the forum the next day, making the development team crying themselves.

This is singular and unparalleled, and why people are attached to those silly earrings.

I still remember that rollercoaster of sadness and joy and heaviness. Especially when the servers came back up after the final save maintenance. What SE did to our world in its final days was haunting. That's why that one rendition of Answers triggers the memories of what we experienced. You just had to be there I tell ppl. I got mine done a month before that last day, I knew ppl on my server at the time, were trying until the final hour before final save. I don't regret anything playing that broken game, it was a unique experience. Really sad when it hit us when the time finally came for our world to end, 2 years went by fast.
You said it with feeling Amiral Benson.
I remember we had so much fun fighting off bosses in Uldah, it was epic, like Besieged on steroids. I participated in defending Uldah's only entrance myself. Those last days were exciting and very sad too. I miss that community. I will speak fondly about 1.0 until my final breath.
