I see both sides of the coin...

For people who make the argument "They tried to be different and failed"
Let's be honest, the game didn't flounder because it was different than FFXI... it failed because it was uninspired, rushed and needed much more work.

For people that say "FFXI player base are the main people playing, and the ones they should be catering to"
Thats true, you dont want to forget your fan base.... but FFXI didn't make it on to anyones best selling games list... I know thats not always an indication of a games worth, but SE definitely wants to tap into the HUGE market share of MMO players that didn't play XI
Look at the franchise... VII is loved by MANY MANY people who never played VI and hadn't heard of the series before that
I LOVE FFVI.... But I didn't get upset when VII was nothing like it...
If SE just wanted to keep its XI player base happy, updated graphics and new expansions in XI would have done that
SE wants to create new fans,
FFXIII has sold 5.5 million copies worldwide... and not to start another debate but I enjoyed previous titles more than XIII....
You can't tell me SE isn't ITCHING to dip into that fanbase for XIV....

For people who say "Dont take anything from XI"
Come on, even if FFXI didn't sell as well as other FF titles or other MMO's, the game was well made, and had some amazing design elements....

SE is doing what I think it should be doing...
Not rehashing FFXI aspects, but using them as inspiration
Capturing the ingenuity, creativity and innovative spirit that went into that game....
Just like I'll never be Michael Jordan, Bill gates or Pele'... but I can sure as hell mimic their attitude, dedication and work ethic

I honest to god hope they do not add auto attack. It gets boring watching your character fight. And in all honesty no one chats in parties much anymore. Most english parties tell ppl to stfu to focus on the exp. Most talkative parties i seen where from japanese. It was not like that in the old days.

I want a new mmo, not a WoW clone that i've seen 30+ times. And not an ffxi clone where min/maxers rule the game like the "popular" kids in high school. And you get bullied for being different.

I just want a fun mmo to play that is new. Something I never played before. And cuz ppl hate change we will never get that : /

Mostly i just want this on ps3 asap...... It suck not playing.
    This explains a lot.

It however doesn't explain the holier-than-thou attitude. Nor the english bashing.

it was not meant as an insult , so sorry if it came across that way.It just explains why he feels about somethings the way he/she does. The game is not the same from concept/youtube than from actually playing it.

No need to apologize, in fact I agree with you 100%.

The problem is that it is NOT a sequel. Every other MMO sequel uses everything from the prequel, but improves upon it in all aspects. FFXIV started from scratch and didn't even meet FFXI at the halfway mark.

For instance, Fields of Valor from FFXI. It was a means to supplement exp PTs as something a little extra, not to be taken advantage of more than once a hour. Now that concept came to FFXIV as guildleves but SE screwed it up by making the MAIN content of the game but limiting it to 8 every 36 hours!
You forgot about behests which run every hour on the hour. Not any time you want them to, but something has got to give. After all thats what the leves are all about.

SE expanded on the subjob idea buy letting you take nearly any ability and stick it to any class, but forgot to apply some type of real focus on a per job basis.
Admittedly true. They are working on that as well as in what way to implement the classic jobs as well.

What about events like campaign or besieged? I'm sure hamlet defense is what this will turn out to be, but that should have been there from day 1.
Again I point to behests, but you are correct in the need for hamlet defense. Different feel defending a spot rather than going searching for rampaging hoards in the countryside. Which brings my next question. Did anyone ever bother with heading off the beastmen before they reached Al Zabi?

A large majority of this games supporters are FFXI vets, and while I don;t think we're upset that it isn't FFXI-2, as i've played and enjoyed other MMOs that played much different than FFXI. But that fact that we were given a game that has nothing going on when FFXI had so much.
Its been 8 years since XI was released in the states. We didn't even see what it was like before Zilart unless we played the Japanese client or participated in NA beta. This is what we have in effect. XIV = XI - RoZ - CoP - ToAU - WotG - addons - Abyssea. Get used to this idea.

It's like this, lets say FFXI is super mario 3, Super Mario 4 turns out to a graphically enhanced pitfall for the atari 2600. A total let down.
It was stated over and over again that the game would not be "finished" before release. The devs said so, even before alpha. I should be surprised that people have the gall to complain over the lack of content, but sadly that would be giving folks too much credit for being informed consumers. Is it too much to ask people to do the research?

If you don't like the game as is, that is a valid complaint. Much work needs to be done to get it to the level that matches everyone's expectations (tall order imho).

The phasing in of the promised content is happening, albeit slowly and one piece at a time. The devs have to balance what the active players want against what will get them more players down the road, but thats business for you isn't it?

If you feel cheated out of your money be thankful SE decided that it would be a mistake to have people pay a subscription for an unfinished title. As it is there was open beta where all the problems were laid bear, and you didn't cancel your pre-order did you? Even when you had the game installed on day one and the same problems were still there, did you go back to the store and demand your money back? No...

So who let you down? The simple answer is: You.

Game companies only change their policy on production when consumers or the market affect their bank accounts. The biggest decider in this scenario was who forked over the money for the game and then demanded their money back. This motivated SE into making the staffing and game changes that have been implemented to date.

Now for some much needed accountability. I like the game. I find it more accessible than XI ever was, and am enjoying watching the systems evolve around me. I wanted to be on board with XI when I first heard of the NA beta, but my computer was simply not up to snuff even 5 years after launch. By all accounts, it was a game for people who had more time to waste than I did at the time anyway. I am enjoying the casual approach that XIV is taking and glad I don't have to put up with most of the annoying elitist crap that pervaded XI. Also, hallelujah for no more RMT tells spamming me every hour on the hour.

I loved XI, and still do cherish the time I and my wife spent there. I got 3 jobs up to the 85 cap after the release of Scars when I felt it was time to go. I wanted something different and I feel I got what I paid for. I had few illusions going into this game, so maybe I feel better about XIV it for that reason.

Looking forward to when the servers come back on.

I bought the game the CE version the second I tried to install it my pc crapped out. I've been following this game a while and personally What is the biggest difference from watching youtube and pressing buttons? I'm watching what everyone else is I just don't control the action.

I'm NA and a long LONG ffxi players. I don't look at ffxi with rose colored glass like most ppl who quit ffxi years ago. I played till feb of this year. I Also am not a stranger to mmo. I do have a long list of titles I played, And have a right to share my thoughts. I was waiting for this game as much as yall. I got it and I saw it wasn't resieved well. I even saw the reason why.

Am I bashing the english.... not really but it is true that no one chats in parties anymore. Least the ones I was in. I even tried getting convo started and was told stfu.

Think before insulting someone. How many of you actually still play ffxiv? (minus the server shut down) I have as much say as anyone here as I did buy the game I want it to be fun.

The similarities between FFXI and FFXIV in my opinion are races and cities. I don't want FFXI-2, but I want it to build on what was great in FFXI. By no means do I want the god awful waiting for party times in FFXI...lol I just want a Final Fantasy experience that draws me in to the story and one that makes me encourage people to purchase the game.

    ^THIS.

Another time, why if you like ff11 so much are here, in the ff14 forum?
I don't bet a cent on a game like ff11, because we are in 2011 and time change.
Read how Blizzard talks about his future project: different from WoW, new experience, next generation.
And what do you want? a revamp of a game 9 years old? Oh please.

P.S. I'm playing FF14. (not this week of course). Do you? If not, what do you want? why are you here?
