Lyse was never going to be a coherent character. She should have been killed off at the end of Heavensward alongside Papalymo as Yda in my opinion. If need be, have her dying wish be a free Ala Mhigo to justify heading there. As it stands, she existed as little more than plot convenience. So much so that two characters far better qualified to lead than her end up conveniently dying to pave the way for her to take up the mantle of leadership in Gyr Abania. She's also immune to consequences for even the most idiotic of her actions as seen by her incompetence leading to Lakshmi being summoned in the very heart of Lyse's recently reclaimed homeland. I dread seeing more of her in the future.

...do they really have that much explicit asian content though? The series has always seemed to be a japanese take on western fantasy tropes more than anything. I'm trying to think through the games and am coming up blank. Like they will put the occasional ninja or samurai in one of the games, but the general feel is a lot more western. I think the only one that would feel a lot more Japanese is Type-0, with the whole magic school academy uniform thing; compare that to FF8's academy and there's quite a difference.

I mean, like the only asian influenced non-MMO game I can think of that really makes it a centerpiece of the story is Jade Empire, by a western dev.

I mean FF7 has Wutai so it's definitely not something new to FF games having an explicitly asian-themed location.
And FFX overall felt very oriental as well.

Yah but you can finish 7 in what, 20h? 30? My point is that I didn’t enjoy SB and I am looking forward for them going back to something NOT SB

To be fair someone pointed out precisely the biggest instances of Asian influence and you hand waved it by saying you can complete those games under a certain time period, so not sure how much good it would have done. Pretty much every FF has some Asian influence, some more than others. I get it not being your cup of tea, it certainly wasn't mine with the exception of the Azim Steppe's but to say that it's a deviation from the overall feel of the series is a bit much. The only two games I can think of without any overt references to Asian culture are 12 and perhaps 13. The rest, even if the references are subtle, do have them. With half the summons being based off of Asian gods, entire characters like Cyan from FF6 embodying the Samurai code not to mention Shadow himself, FF10 having huge plot influences taken from Asian philosophy, Wutai from FF7, the Four Lords from FF5, and then all the little nods in terms of monster designs and a couple tongue in cheek references or names. Just because the themes aren't flashing neon signs in your face throughout the series for the most part doesn't mean they aren't there and appear with a good deal of regularity.

    Asian...Ascian...
CONSPIRACY! *Puts on pointy tinfoil hat*

But in all seriousness, yes, asian themes are all over the place in various Final Fantasies, to pretend otherwise is just factually incorrect.

As for the rest of the thread...oh wow there sure is a lot of misinformation flying around in here. Not that that is particularly unusual.

Yup, in FFIV we have Eblan as a kingdom of ninjas, and Fabul as a kingdom ruled by monks.

VI had Doma, wich could be a mix between western and eastern cultures.

VII had Wutai, wich was the only power who could face Shinra in the past.

X has its own culture, but it's very inspired in japanese culture.

I don't know a lot about XI but looking at Iroha, Tenzen, the Four Heavenly Beasts...

FFT have a lot of lore on itens and jobs implying there is a foreign nation away from Ivalice with samurais and taoists.

Type-0 has four great nations based on the Heavenly Beasts, and one of them have eastern aesthetics.

One of the main characters in Dimensions is a ninja. He leads a clan focused on killing rulers.

And I'm not going in detail about summons, enemies or gear. But it is in there! I, for one, hope to see more of Hingashi.
