America is a huge body of land, sometimes referred to as the Americas in the English-speaking world. The United States of America is a piece of that land. They are not it. I've already accepted that nobody's going to change the term "American" because any alternative would be too long. But being part of the continent(s) but not the country makes me annoyed everytime someone refers to it as America.

North America and South America are huge bodies of land, and encompass quite a diverse number of peoples, America typically refers to the abbreviation of the United States of America, as when people are talking about the land masses they will usually refer to them individually as North or South America, or in the whole as the Americas. It follows the convention of abbreviating what we call the citizens of the USA to "Americans" ;though technically limited in its scope, is really one of our shorter options due to there being no word in English like there are in other languages (like estadio unidense in Spanish, don't mind my spelling). Also, most people know what you are talking about when you say America or Americans in English, so just keep away from those classifications when speaking a language with specific words for that country or that people and you'll be fine.
