What Yoshi-P has said is that, the Devs look to create a job with a uniqe play style that works in the game; which is why there are major changes only during expansions. Anyway, they look to create a new job for the current game. If that job can fit into the mold of any of the already existing jobs within the FF series they will use that name, as they realize that a lot of players want the iconic jobs. If however, the job doesn't fit into a preexisting mold, then they will create a "new" job. AST is sorta the only product of this, as it's not an iconic job, yet, but its play style and skill set are almost identical to Time Mage. Though Bard and Scholar don't match that much either. I mean with SB's release Bard feels like a Bard so it works "now" but why make Archer a Bard in the first place. And Scholar, semi fits, I guess. Thematically, they've always been like a mirror image of RDM, but weaker physically, stronger magically, and geared more towards healing than attacking. I guess they were paired with ARN because in XI they were DoT specialist. It works, but I wouldn't "think" of SCH first when adding a job to the ARN base class... I think.

While I'll not say it's been stated, as it "has" but not in the direct wording, AST is heavily based on Time Mage. Since both deal with Time and Space, and use a significant amount of buffs; Regen, Haste, Gravity, Comet/Malefic, Speed/Lightspeed, Quick/Arrow, Extend/Time Dilation, Reraise/Ascend(a little bit of a stretch but still). And one could argue that their 60-70 quests alludes to it more, since, usually Time Mages use the Quake spell for standard damage; Quake is earth and Geomancers are about the earth. Originally, they were going to be Chemists, but that changed because of balancing issues. How a Chemist turned into AST is unknown, nor why they didn't just call it a Time Mage from the start. But yeah just like us never getting a Ranger, the odds of us getting a Time Mage are slime, since it would just be copy and paste.
