Do you take it with you when you travel? That's not at all practical when I'm on vacation and get a call from work about a critical problem that requires one of those admin passwords, because I'm not keen on driving back home to get the password, and I'm really not keen on carrying a list of them in paper form because god help me if I misplace it.

Security is all about what it is you want to protect, how important it is, and how much effort you're willing to put into protecting it. That last part gets ignored by a lot of security advice, which is why it fails so often. Password managers make good passwords far, far easier to use by automating a lot of it and making it accessable. You take on a different risk by using one, but that risk is significantly less than doing what people usually do without one: have bad password practices.

It's really all about what tradeoffs you are willing to make to get the security level you need, with a system you'll actually follow consistently.

My work doesn't require passwords so I don't need to take the list with me on vacation, but I can understand it's risky to carry it in person if one needs to know those passwords wherever they go. Thanks for the explanation. I'll definitely look into password managers in the future if the situation requires it.

Also - do not share your accounts guys.... aside from the obvious. Don't leave your computer unattended...etc..etc.

lol yush, don't pulverize any living things.....lol I know it seems far fetched to do all this, but you would be surprised how your life can be turned upside down by someone acquiring your banking info and mailing addy. let's be safe!

I want to add on that in this day and age, lots of people just don't make good passwords in general. Passwords should be longer than five characters...

I use entire sentences as my passwords.

Something super long so it's proof against computer cracking, and yet memorable so you can recall it. A favorite song lyric of a less popular song, a poem line, a scripture line, a line or quote from a famous person, or a saying someone you know has.

Change just a few characters over to numbers, symbols, and tamper with casing. Not too much, you need to remember it. But enough that it's not just the exact phrase.

Keep in mind that adding too many numbers, casing, symbols and such actually makes BAD passwords... if you ever have trouble remembering a password even after having more than two dozen different ones, it's a bad password...
