I took a long and circuitous route to White Mage as my main, though perhaps it was always inevitable since it was my main in FFXI. I did not like the 1.0 conjurer very much, but I loved 1.0 thaumaturge, with its conal AOE and interesting astral/umbral spells. It's the only class I got to 50 before 2.0 (and while I did unlock black mage, I was only doing solo content so I rarely equipped the job crystal).
In 2.0 I started off as an Arcanist since, being the new job, it was the only one that was level 1. I ended up really enjoying scholar, because I do love to heal, and that was my main through ARR's plot. I did level everything, though, so when I was asked to join my FC's raid group to try to beat T5, I went as white mage instead since we already had a scholar. While I quit the raid scene pretty quickly (a few weeks into T6), I stuck with white mage. To be totally honest, a large part of that was due to not wanting to micromanage my fairy at all, ever, though now I love the play style of today's white mage, and Assize is probably my favorite ability in the game (and has been since it was a lot more mediocre in Heavensward).
Aside: The story of how I became a white mage in FFXI is a lot less complicated. I liked being able to get party invites, and I was too cheap to pay teleport fees.![]()
