Note that it states: so the retainer slots are not part of that initial $5/month charge and it's not really a bonus unless you're already paying for all 7 additional retainers.

I have a feeling that's an error, because it doesn't make any sense (since it explicitly says "...can be employed by a single character"). Also the slide says "an additional retainer can be hired" and you don't "hire" retainers on the Mog Station, you hire them at the Retainer Vocate.

But if it actually does just let you spend another $2/month on retainers, that's even less useful. Which does back up the argument that Square Enix is overcharging for this stuff, but also means you can easily skip on paying this fee and makes the idea that this is a slippery slope kind of laughable.
