by that logic I could win even more by unsubbing and save myself not only time but real money... this game has no defined endgame so winning is arbitrary based on personal goals...

Well technically you would win more real life but P2W has to be about the game so yes you would still win more time if you have P2W advantages. Its often the reason behind such items. Either get stronger items or you can do something faster. The last one is what retainers do. You can sell stuff faster and get to your goals faster. I mean what game truly has a very specific defined endgame? Wouldnt that make booster and stuff like that kinda okay in nearly all games? And if this game has none, why not sell savage gear on the mog station or boosters? I mean its not THE endgame right?

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
