I for one dont like to be called out by just my class. Find it condescending, and Cait isnt long to type either. its not something i saw in like the first 3 years i played 14, only the last few months i have seen it used.

For me it doesnt happen that way. But I could see it happening for people who have 6+ letters in their characters first name.

It's about the context. If you say "Cook, do this!" then it may be rude depending on the tone and exact situation. If you say "Cook, can you do this?" or "Cook, please do this." then only a person inept at communications would think it offensive.
Case in point, names represent you while job names represent the job you are doing. If someone uses your jobs name in place of your actual name, it means that your job is the important part in what they are going to follow it up with.

It's still a lot less condescending when someone says "Cook, do this!" than when they say "Josh, do this!" for that very reason. In first case they are talking from a high horse to the cook while at the latter case they are looking down on you, specifically. And, let's be honest...People ARE paid for offering specific services. So it is their duty to do them. Saying "Hey, waitress!" is only reasonable and there is nothing offensive to it. Even if she'll have a name tag, it is less rude than if you called her by that name.

People don't necessarily look at the names in the first place. I do only once I need to say something to them out of battle. In battle, I'll use tank, healer or DPS/attacker...then again there is nothing I'd care about telling to any specific damage dealer during battle at any point. Either before or after it. So it would be "DPS/Attacker, use limit break!" or the like.
And if someones name is difficult at a glance, like Iljiminna, you can be sure as hell that I will not use it.

My characters name is Seraphitia, which is quite long, but can easily be shortened to Sera. At the same time, I'd prefer strangers to call me by the job at the time than use the shortening. I do not particularly enjoy being called by nicknames by random strangers, nor do I do that myself. Calling me by my jobs name removes that familiarity where it's not wanted.
Then again, it'd be petty to get offended by it either way. Ultimately you should worry more about what's being said and why.

I'd rather be called out by WAR. Everyone knows who you're talking about. Although if you take offense by being called on your class, you might overestimate how much people care about you as a person other than a warm body to fit in specific role/class.

I don't like being called out by my class. I find it impersonal and somewhat cold. And in previous MMOs it was used as a way to reduce you down as a person, since names were always fully shown. But I also realize that this MMO gives people the option to play with just initials on. So whatever I might think in my head, I don't let it come out in my play.

Because I use initials as names are distracting, and 3 letters is easier to type. Maybe if you wanted people to refer to you by name, you shouldn't have made one so long and aggravating to type in the middle of a game. We only have 2.5s GCD and most are much faster than that.

    AncientCrystal prey or WAR prey

What do you think is easier

If it's something like "the scholar should take care of it because they have indom", where it's actually because of a reason tied to my job, then I typically don't mind.

But if it's something like "scholar has prey" (or whatever), then it's like "erm...ok. I have a name."

I also don't like it when people do it for other party members, especially for calling out who's got a mech that deals damage, because as a healer I have to prep for it and now I have to look at an icon instead of reading a name (and I'm much faster at reading names).
Yeah do you know who also has names?

Literally every other scholar. Sorry you're the 1 person on the planet that has an easier time recognizing a name instead of a picture. Ignoring the science behind that, I dont care what your name is. If we're in a static that's one thing. But I don't need to know who you are, I need to know your JOB. You could be ANYBODY and it won't change that the game doesn't care for your name either. Mechanics aren't going to target YOU, they're going to target the JOB.

And this isn't a new thing, we've been doing this for as long as class based games have existed. Heck as far back as DnD.

If you want to be referred to by name then pick a name that doesn't require a minute to type.

Most of the people complaining about this are the exact same kind of people with the "names" you would expect. When I'm called by my job like WHM or DRK, I don't complain. And why? I honestly have a counterargument, Luin is 1 hand to type, all the letters are right there, rather than typing WHM or DRK. It's because your name doesn't matter in the context of the game.

You seemed really worked up, you even used caps. Maybe it's because it's text, and text always sounds worse (though usually people having sentences with "Sorry ...you're the 1 person on the planet" are fairly worked up), but I don't think my little comment merited such a reply and I really don't want you to have a bad day. Today's sunday. It's a good day.

    So I want to clarify:

    1) I am very much aware that some people might prefer icons over text. I have an unnaturally fast reading ability to the point that I read even when I'm not trying to. That's me. So personally I prefer that. That doesn't mean I expect other people to know that, nor to share in this feeling.

Though given that the job icons aren't necessarily very intuitive, unless someone has taken the effort to learn which icons are which jobs, it's not that unconscionable to think some people might prefer text over some strange icons. I still get ninja and samurai icons confused sometimes, but if SE gave me the option to switch out that icon for a different one that just had SAM in a border, I'd much prefer that.

    2) When I said that I'm like "erm...ok. I have a name." I should have clarified that this is something I think. It is not something that I say in the chat. A person partying with me wouldn't know that I just felt that, most because in the end I don't care all that much about it.. I'm not going to try to stop people from using jobs or make them feel bad about it. It's a pet peeve, not a complaint. It's something that I notice for all of about 0.01 seconds. (and about 0.02 seconds when it's done over voice chat, because I need the extra 0.01 second to think "it's not like you're typing")

While it is true that I have seen this in other games as well, it was something more typical in things like 25man raids. In 10 and under, most of the people I have ever played with used shortened versions of names (aka: I'm "Squint", not "Squintina") unless they were annoyed at someone (and yes this is anecdotal so my experience does not necessarily reflect a general concensus).

I woke up this morning, wondering what things should upset me for the day. i wen't with people not using my full name in a game No but seriously using a persons job imo is no different than using a person's rank in combat. What you want me to use your name? what if there was some mob hiding and then he goes and murders you in your sleep later? I find using character's name immersion breaking when we are in combat
