I got use to it in WoW, as long as it wasn't "Huntard" In WoW though, and most other mmos, you have one class per character and it becomes part of your character's identity. In FFXIV I am unlikely to respond to just my Job name, since I play most of them. I know which job I'm playing and all, I just don't connect Job/Class names directly to my character, except for maybe my first. If I'm playing Red Mage I'm more likely to respond to Archer or Bard.

Do you know how long Sea Wolf Roegadyn names are?

    That's why.

It's not new or a trend. We did it 15 years ago in FFXI, we did it in V1 and we have done it since ARR rereleased. It's just mmo shorthand and nothing more.

If you are going to get offended by something this trivial, the real world has a whole lotta surprises for you.

This has been happening since I started mmo's with FFXI over 10 years ago. I still do it out of habbit and see nothing wrong with it.

Given the strange butcherings of my character's name I have seen in chat with PF/DF groups, I am usually relieved to just be called by my job. XD

Also, personally, I have names off and the party list is really small when you're sitting on a couch all the way across the room from a TV, say. Usually it's safer for me to just call by the job rather than trying to squint at the screen until I get the right spelling of the person's name.

    This.

A lot of people use really long names (just...why?) so it's easier just to say the name of their job or use a short version of the name. For example: "Lockensergffxiv Serges" (this is a fake name btw). Let's say he's a WHM. It's easier to say "WHM, we need Medica II asap!". Or the short version name: "Locke or Serge" we need more Medica II asap!"

    See?

Honestly, I don't find it rude at all. Makes more sense than typing in their long behind name in the text chat during a fight. Of course if you use discord or other voice chats like Skype you don't need to worry about that too much.

I usually refer to people by job (assuming there aren't dupes). It's just easier that way. This game encourages quick communication.

    - Some people just play seeing the initials on their party
    This is another big reason.

In another mmo I played a healer with a three letter name...and players still called me "healer".

If you knew him sure but if he is a stranger your probably going to call him chef
