From what I can see, there are already quite a lot of variations on short hair in the character creator already, whereas more elaborate styles are more likely to involve longer hair, which is seen as feminine.
Long hair doesn't have to feminine, I have long hair and it doesn't look feminine. Which I think is the issue most of the long hairstyles have been taken directly from female modes so they look terrible on a male.
