Again, that article seems to be specifically referencing the Xbox Live Gold requirement on having a paid subscription to access ANY online functions. I do not believe it's referencing MS's unwillingness to have games cross-platform.

I agree, the GOLD requirement sucks, but it makes sense. If they make an exception for FFXIV, what's to stop every other developer to question this exception or ask for the exception for their game.
