I'm not sure about *every* sign in the game, but the vast majority are readable. It's 90% English letters with a few reversed letters and odd shapes (eg. the "HQ" item symbol is actually an Eorzean 'S'). You can decipher it by looking at the maps and comparing the symbols to what you know the label should say.

My only other thought is that a Lalafell player might be able to get a closer look at the gravestone in first-person view.

I can follow up with what Iscah said, its definitely a version of english. Though its hard to read, most of the stuff in the game can be deciphered into what it says in english. The letters, although yeah they do look 'runic' to some degree, they are english letters, and can be deciphered. In this case however the texture is the root cause of the issues.

I hate to shoot this down, but.. due to how bad the textures are on the grave stone, the closer you get, the worse it looks and the harder it is to read.

I think it might be that the text is too fuzzy to read, but from a distance it just looks like it's fuzzy because you're standing too far away to read it.

Seems disappointing from a design level, unless they really *couldn't* make it display at any better resolution than that. A better readable version for the closeup in the cutscene would have been a good idea.

It's a runic alphabet, but it transcribes directly to the modern English alphabet. Some of the in-game texts do appear to be non-English or gibberish, yes. But, these are mostly in ruins or things like the Demon Book. Signs in the civilized parts of Eorzea can be read as English when they are legible enough. Given that this tombstone was written by Ishgardians and is very recent, we should be able to read it if anyone can make out the letters.

Whoops, I’ve been so distracted I forgot to check on this thread, but yeah, the Eorzean alphabet is literally English with a different style of stroke in writing. The most obvious example is “NO ENTRY” seen on a lot of blocked-off doors, and the Gold Saucer posters

I would take a crack out it.. but can't log into the game at the moment. But looking at the image on gamerescape, and then looking at the runin alphabet: https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Alphabet

Lots of lowercase letters with the long stem are used.

Sadly, the texture is really too low to make it out. Got close using /gpose. The sideview looks the clearest, but still hard to read, if at all.

That's not too bad to make a start on... up to a point, after which I'm stumped again.

    Third line:
    - first letter seems to be a capital "L"
    - second word starts with "r" (no other tailed letters curl that way)
    - alternately the second word, first letter isn't readable, but the second letter is "c"
    - both words end in "g" (or possibly "c", but that's unlikely)

    Fourth line:
    - if the two lines are a single phrase and the first letter is lowercase, then it must be "b", "d" or "h" because they're the only 'tall' letters. The word could be "his" or "him".
    - no other tailed or tall letters, leaving a choice of: a, e, i, l, m, n, o, s, u, v, w, x, z
    - is that the word (not letter) "a" in the middle?

It's so annoying. Clearly it's been made, at a game level, especially for this - so surely they wouldn't have put gibberish on it when every street sign in the game is legible if you look at it closely enough.

    Third line:
The first word might be "Living".
The second word also looks like it ends in "ing". I agree that's an "r" at the front, but I'm not sure it's the first letter.

My best guess at the fourth line is "Died in honor".

you all trying to get in close, might try turning off the texture depth. It might look a bit more legible that way'
