While mostly true that they had the spread on role possibilities (you also missed staves, rods and clubs in that weapon list), they never were historically tanks in any Final Fantasy game unless every job could tank just as well, if not better. Now that doesn't mean that if devs ever were to release Blue Mage as a playable job that they could make it a tank (which I wouldn't be wholly opposed to), but it just wouldn't be as representative of past games in the series compared to other jobs currently available.

I need to make this line part of my forum sig. So nice to see lines like this from other people for a change.

Suggestion for Blue mage weapon Sword Whip, possibly paired with another.
    Wait, is that Haseo?

Blue Mage could definitely be interesting. That said, those who are Blue Mage 'purists' would almost certainly be disappointed with whatever we got since it most definitely wouldn't be the same as earlier iterations. It would be restricted to one role and it's skills would almost certainly be learned through Job quests where you went to 'learn' monster's magic.

Part of the charm of Blue Mage has been the hunt for spells from the monsters of the world and the versatility of the Job which a FF14 Job almost certainly wouldn't have. After all, it needs to fit into the existing party dynamic.

I've never played as a Blue Mage but just the concept of it alone is so interesting, I don't think I'd be able to resist it if it ever came to XIV.

I couldn't imagine how they were going to put Red Mage in the game, but they did it.

I'd imagine Blue Mage would only be able to learn certain abilities from certain monsters. Not all monsters. Like "Bad Breath" from a Morbol as an AOE or that electric whisker cone attack from a Coeurl.

My thoughts on BLU that I think would be awesome and also pave the way for a little more differentiation for future classes.

Weapon: Some type of magicked pole (would easily allow for melee and spellcasting).

Weaponskills: Blue would have an assortment of weaponskills similar to to RDM, where they are used after a gauge is filled, but would work the opposite way. You melee to fill the bar instead. The weaponskills themselves have nothing to do with blue magic apart from filling this gauge.

Spells: Spells are learned from enemies just like in every other FF game BLU has been in. Instead of learning new SPELLS (not weaponskills) from levelling, you would gain something along the lines of "Vilekin Essence" (or any of the other enemy-families). Once learned, you can slot in a spell from that family. You can put any ability from that family into that slot, however, some of the abilities would be gaited by job quests. The job quests would unlock your "traits" that you normally gain passively through leveling. When you complete your (just throwing a number out there) level 35 quest, you learn the "Enemy Essence II" trait, which allows you to now go out and learn the stronger abilities from the enemy families.

Role Abilities: Once you slot in your spells, you become aspected to a certain role. Once you have been assigned your role, you can only then select your role actions (PITA, I know, but its a good way to give people a BLU that functions the way most want it).

Running out of steam here, and also at work, but i think it could work
