You have spells named after monster abilities, but the game "teaches" you these spells in instance fights where you pretty much have to learn it. But also if i'm honest, I think that something along those lines is all this community wants.
Hmm... maybe an artificially created soulstone that allows the user to acquire abilities from essence from fallen enemies? And your quest NPC is the mad scientist that created it that keeps sending you off to fight monsters for research? And job quests that involve having to deal with the people hunting said scientist? Maybe make this mad scientist a short red haired girl named Washu... >.> *shrug*

If showcasing my concept for Blue Mage on these forums taught me anything, it's that no, that's not what the majority of this community wants. They want that detail-for-detail Blue Mage exactly like how it was in XI.

This is why Yoshi is so opposed to bringing Blue Mage into the game. What the people calling for it want is just vastly too unrealistic with how the game actually works, and he knows that better than anyone.

Actual customizable FFXI style blue magic is only going to appear in FFXIV if it's layered on top of a mechanic that fits the tank/healer/damage trinity.

Kimahri from FFX was sort of the base for my thoughts on FFXIV BLU. He used enemy attacks as his overdrive, BLU building up a job gauge that enables you to use enemy abilities (presumably picked out beforehand from a list) would fit in a trinity MMO because whatever it is you do to build the gauge can be built around traditional trinity gameplay.

I unfortunately don’t know much about blue mage other than they use monster powers, like catmancer (i’d be okay with this too) in bravely second. But stealing and using monster powers is all Shanoa from castlevania does!

I imagine blue mage as a melee caster (that’s what she basically is). Some ranged is okay, but the gist of it is that most spells would be gcd instants with no cast time, but cost mp instead of tp. And ofc the spells would come from monsters (like Bad Breath could be a frontal cone instant similar to how pally’s circle of scorn is an instant)

It would be kinda like a wow druid actually, like cat form for melee, but boomkin spells for ranged.

I also... have a crazy fantasy of blue mage in manticore mode as tank just so that I can have the tank/healer/dps trinity if blu/whm/rdm

BLU, WHM, RDM & BLM. 4 man 'colour' mage dungeon runs .

Honestly, blue mages not being tanks would drive me crazy. Tanks have a blue symbol, blue mages are blue. You can't give them a red DPS symbol

As nice as it would be in theory, contrary to popular belief, Blue Mages were never tanks, historically being either full-blown "clothies" or being no sturdier than what a typical melee DPS would be. Yes, they occasionally had to get hit to learn a spell, although most cases simply required them to just see the spell to learn it along with couple of examples that required either an item or ability. And I'm sure there's someone to say "but they were tanks in XI", to which my response has always been "so was everything else".

Now Green Mage would be more of a tank, but that would be weird too giving them a blue tank symbol.

They heal, they tank, they do damage, they buff. They use lances, whips, swords and forks. They wear every kind of armor. Blue Mages are a blank canvas, and if the FFXIV team could fit them into whatever role they want. Other than learning enemy skills, Blue Mages have no long term traditions holding them down, because every game handles them differently.

Anyone who says "BLU is impossible in this game" is working under a very narrow and restrictive definition of what makes a Blue Mage.

Of COURSE BLU can exist in this game, as long as you build it according to this game's limitations and strengths.

    - Will BLU have a bazillion spells? Of course not. And, honestly, FFXI was the only game where BLU had such a crazy variety. BLU would probably have around a dozen or so Blue Magic spells, as well as a number of job abilities, if built in this game.

    - Will BLU learn spells directly from enemies? They can - but likely will as part of their Job Quests, ensuring that, like other jobs, only those who have completed their job quests will have a full range of abilities.

    - Will BLU be ejected from parties for not having all their Blue Magic? See directly above; if you would eject a player who hadn't finished their job quests, you'd eject a BLU for the same reason.

    - Will BLU equip spells, like in XI? Probably not, but possibly. Different jobs in this game have different ways of accomplishing their roles; it could be that BLU's "quirk" includes spell-setting.

In short, set all your expectations for BLU aside. It can quite certainly be added to this game, but would need to be built from the ground up to fit within this game.

A Blue Mage is a mage that uses spells that mimic monster abilities. That's all that's required. Everything else - a learning system, spell equipping, type of weapons used, and so on - can vary from game to game, and in the history of Final Fantasy games, HAS. With such simple requirements, there's nothing stopping them from designing a BLU that would fit the mold of FFXIV. Unfortunately, Yoshi-P, like many in this thread, has gotten hung up on some past incarnation of BLU, to the point where he can't see how it would work. He knows, though, that the job is popular, so it's not out of the question that he will find a way past his mental block someday.

Wrong thread? This is Blue Mage, not Dancer.
