The way it works in Destiny 2, is after you reach max level you still gain EXP, and each "level" you gain gives you one of the loot boxes from Eververse.

Things that are contained in those boxes are cosmetic items only(emotes, shaders, ships, speeders, exotic weapon GLAMOUR - no weapons in actuality, as you can't use the glamour without having the actual weapon first).

Edit: This is from me playing it before the Osiris expansion came out - haven't logged into in for a few months, so it can be outdated information

Armor and Sparrows all had effects that affected the game and that should have never been a thing.

Also tokens to boost XP.

Now they are changing that
