The second FFXIV adds loot boxes to the game/cash shop is the second I deactivate my sub. Destiny & games like it represent everything wrong with gaming these days.

You know, thinking about this, we technically do have loot boxes through Palace of the Dead. Though it's for stuff that is already in game, and not on the cash shop.

and unlike Destiny we pay a month sub so... SE doesn't really need to go down the whole loot box thing

If they were to make cash shop items available in game, I would expect it to be gated behind some kind of ludicrous grind, so as not to completely discourage sales.

You'd either grind for it like a relic, or just buy it.

Destiny 2 is bleeding players daily. They've only made this decision out of desperation to save the ship they put holes in to begin with.

And like ThirdChild said, if Mogstation items were obtainable in-game, expect absurdly long grinds.

back when they were not under the thumb of Activision

Back then they were under the thumb of Microsoft, not a huge difference other than they were smart and negotiated better terms and limited access to their section of the campus. I heard they once had Bill Gates removed because he wasn't authorized to enter, didn't have an appointment to come over either.
