The whole reason why I bring this is up, is because if fishing is not fun, unrewarding, and not bringing you any enjoyment, then don't do it. Why are you torturing yourself?
Well I am not torturing myself with it that much. I do it a bit when I feel bored of other stuff. A the same time I just want any part of the game to feel fun so thats the reason I post in this thread. I know of no single person ingame that enjoys fishing which is sad because in other MMOs this was always a nice and relaxing side action. And there were games where it was even fun because you had to do more than throwing out the rod and hope for RNG. Because right now this is the only part of this fishing..

And yes its luck. How can you say its not? When you have two people with the complete same equipment at the same time with the same actions..well one can catch it and one not. That is pure luck. There is no skill involved other than maybe knowing where to get it. And it might be that somewhere along the way you will complete it but only if RNG likes you..so theoretically you might also never finish it if RNG is not on your side. So yes luck is involved in this.

The RNG in combat is still nothing compared to this. You could say that the RNG is more like the one with the high diadem weapon. x) Where you first need luck to have the weather, luck to defeat the boss, luck to be the one that gets the weapon, luck to have it be the weapon you need with good stats..and as a consequence nobody wants to truly do diadem because its not worth it. And the same can be said with fishing. There might be some that do it but for the majority its just not fun and maybe a bit of a change there might make it more fun for more people. And with my examples (the scrolls) you could still hit your head against the wall with the RNG or you could be rewarded for leveling and gearing up your job and getting currency with it and thus might make it a bit easier. Heck they could say that these scrolls are only for the ARR fishes because they are already quite old content.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

I was being overdramatic with the word "torture", but I think you know where I'm getting at. You're not having fun doing it. I get that you wish it was an activity you find enjoyable, but you say that you don't know anyone in game who does enjoy it, and are generally dissatisfied with the mechanics involved. It just sounds like unless fishing is given a complete revamp, it will just never be an activity you will find fun. Even if they did adjust the gathering rates so older fish were easier to catch, the lack of engagement would still be a problem for you.

The biggest reason why I say it isn't luck, because there is no way on this planet that I would say, "You must be lucky." to anyone who completes the log. I would respect the effort this angler put in without question. The only requirements to complete the log is time and patience. If you don't complete it before you stop playing the game, or the game is no longer playable - you did not have the time. If you get frustrated and quit - you did not have the patience. But with enough of each, you WILL complete it. No luck is required. That is not to say there are no instances of luck with fishing. When I caught Heliocorpion, the guy I was talking to fishing next to me had been going after him for the last six months (mostly due to windows not lining up with playtime), but there have been many, many windows for him. And then here comes lil'ol me and gets him on my first try, not even using HW abilities. That's lucky.

As for the rest of your reply, I don't want to veer off topic continuing to compare combat RNG to FSH RNG. Addressing possible changes to fishing though, I should speak for myself only, but I believe both players who do and don't enjoy the current system would be welcome to adjustments that would involve some kind of skill/engagement in order to compensate for the low catch rate of big fish so long as it doesn't compromise the current system, achievement progression, active quests, etc. I for one, don't oppose it. But I also don't oppose the current fishing system.

Sorry maybe I have wrote it a little bad too.

I still find some enjoyment out of fishing and I just like to complete logs. So I do like sitting there, watching some videos next to it and waiting for the fish to bite. But I just dont enjoy the RNG part of the big fishes so much. I am fine with making a list out of the apps and thus planning to catch some of those big fishes. Watching for the right weather and the right bait is fine. I just dont like the last part where you will have to hope for luck. Its just frustrating to have a good equipped lvl 70 fisher and yet still fail to catch an ARR fish. (I mean I am fine if you need that time and patience for the SB ones) Thats why I would like that our work that was put into leveling the job and gearing it up would help. It would feel like a progression of my skills.

This is why I gave the example with the scrolls. People still have to put work behind it by getting to 70 and things like that but they will also get a bit of a help. Maybe instead of yellow scrips you have to capture some SB fishes. Just something that will help those with bad luck. Because I find it highly unfair if someone has to fish 6 real life months for one fish while one catches it in one go. Yes you could say that somewhere down the line you might finish the log..but if someone has bad luck and need months with each big fish..how will they realistically finish it, especially if they cant play hours of hours per day? While another one might catch one big fish per week or even day..
